Seattle apartment buildings used to be called things like "The Cedar Arms" and now they're all called FLUX or interSector. Even if I was in tech, I would not want to live in FLUX or interSector.

Like, are these guys often useful idiots for fascists? Sure, of course. But are they intentionally pursuing being tools of the authoritarians? Most of the time, usually not. Why does that distinction matter? Because 50k+ people who voted for Trump voted for Zohran just a few months later.

I wish there's a way to tell all the political fundraisers and mail lists to stop sending my deceased dad mail. He won't be voting or donating money. Ironically as a kid I remember "stuffing envelopes" and labelling "slate cards" with him, as my dad was very involved in grassroots SF politics.

This is really worth a read if you are progressive/lefty/liberal and you are concerned about the politics of supporting trans rights/existence in America, and why it's not the same fight as same-sex marriage earlier this century.

Getting frustrated with the weird audio in zoom - specifically the inability to level individual participants in a group chat. In frustration, we tried out discord (turns out everyone on the team already uses it for personal stuff) and the experience was *SO* much better. Why zoom no do better?

Pro-tip: If you have a safety deposit box, keep an up-to-date list of contents, keep your keys somewhere your inheritors (or lawyers etc) knows about and also make sure to mention in writing to the bank and in your will that specific other people can access it. Also maybe not use Wells Fargo...

A near future where gig work is reduced to being sensors and actuators for #AI systems that design and execute business processes. Even doctors would be just sensors and actuators. Kinda lays it all bare, doesn't it.

We were taught to write like lawyers in law school. It's a highly structured and stilted way of communicating but the words have specific value, so it's accepted. I recently learned of "Simplified Technical English" and wow. I wish I had known about it a long time ago. www.asd-ste100.org

Words have meaning. It's what lawyers build their entire world view around. And it's also what LLM's build their world view around. It's *not* what most software engineers build their world view around (*code* & *data* have meaning) Interesting watching SE's struggle with being word-focused.

It is utterly pathetic that the Seattle-area press are so-focused on the amount of time it took to disperse information to the press, rather than focusing on the underlying crime and why it happened and how it could be prevented again. Lots of thinly veiled agendas in the local press here.

this "freedom fuel" gas chain being promoted by the White House has got to be one of the cheesiest, transparently gritty things the White House has done in at least a week. What happens when they start losing money selling gas below market prices? Or is someone funding this as propaganda?

As someone who uses AI tools all day long for software development, my perspective is that if AI tools were cheaper, then they would get used a LOT more. The economics and externalities are an interesting to think about. AI is _supply_ constrained and that's kind of shocking, honestly.
