On my way to 's-Hertogenbosch, to attend the 2nd Power to the Peatlands Conference. @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social sends a big team and I'm happy to be part of it. 1st P2P conference been awesome, so expectations are high 😊. Can't wait to exchange about raised-bog restoration. @aerenchyma.bsky.social

We factor in C losses as on-site CO2 emissions from the areal share of causeways/bunds. The rough estimate is 15% for TSR5-10 and 40% for TSR30. Less TSR and minimising causeway/bund area are two sides of the same coin. Therefore TSR5-10 has less CO2 emissions from this element and higher CO2 1/

-Removing as little as 5-10 cm of agricultural topsoil avoids most of the methane emissions after rewetting; in most cases, this is enough to build bunding structures for water retention -Removing thicker layers (e.g., 30 cm) increases CO2 emissions without improving Sphagnum establishment 2/

All in all very tricky in a nutrient-enriched, Sphagnum depleted environment like Northern Germany. We hope to look at those aspects during the project as they have implications for raised bog restoration practice after agricultural use.

Via spores and probably fragments dispersed by wildlife (birds?). Spores can travel very far (>100s km) but establishment seems more likely with nearby Sphagnum occurrences. Also spore production is different among Sphagnum species as are preferred site conditions for succesful establishment.
