We get a variety of woodpeckers coming to the yard. This is from last week though they are even around today during this bad weather. I think this one is a Downy. #birds

Another sure sign of fall approaching. The back yard is filled with white wood aster. Over the years we've transplanted them and scattered dried seeds and they've spread covering a good part of the yard. Bees love them! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurybia...

My photo shows a small figurine of a bear carved and polished out of a piece of amber between 9600 and 4100 BC. The amber is a deep translucent orange in colour which is emphasised by the display lighting against a dark background which makes the amber glow. The bear's head is carved to show ears, mouth, nostrils and eyes. A hole runs through the bear's torso, suggesting it was threaded onto a cord. Dimensions:
Length 10.2 cm, Height 4.2cm

I took this photo today at the Landesmuseum Halle in Germany where the bear is currently on loan from Poland for the excellent Shamaness exhibition.

The figurine was discovered in Stupsk during peat mining in 1887. According to the National Museum in Szczecin "Shortly after its discovery, the figure underwent conservation work to restore its original appearance as it was covered with a layer of dull patina from the exposure to the minerals contained in the peat. Already at that time, at the end of the 19th century, it was assumed the restoration had gone too far. The figure was stripped entirely of patina, the anatomical features of the animal were emphasised, the eyes and nostrils were sharply drawn, and the amber was carefully polished".

In 2013, a competition was organised by the Education Department of the National Museum in Szczecin, for children to choose a name for the bear. The winning name was 'Stupcio', an affectionate diminutive meaning 'little guy from Stupsk'.

Most of our lawn is gone. This is the newest transformed section.

A large wildflower bed with zinnias, black eyed susans, cosmos and others. The flowers are where a lawn used to be and attracts all sorts of bees and butterflies.

Big and small. Several of the groundhogs have started to come back for food. They disappeared for a bit with only a few rare visits. But now it looks like they are starting to pack on the pounds to prepare for winter. #groundhog #woodchuck

Groundhog buffet is very popular. We have four adults and several young ones who regularly visit. This is the largest one. She/he often runs away when the smaller ones appear.

Thursday July 6, 1944, was a miserably hot day in Connecticut. In a field on Barbour Street in Hartford, between six- and eight-thousand patrons sought distraction from the summer heat by attending a performance of the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. A matinee show featuring trapeze artists, clowns, and animal trainers drew customers into the roughly 500-foot-long big top. No one had any idea they were about to play a part in one of the worst disasters in Connecticut history.

I don't know what's going on here, but I like the style of this vintage Waterbury Watch (+- 1880's) American trade card. The Waterbury Clock Company was founded in 1854. It later became Timex which is still headquartered in Connecticut.

No law enforcement officer operating in Connecticut—federal, state, or local—can wear a mask on duty. ICE and CBP agents have to show their faces and badges. And when an officer assaults someone recording them, commits false imprisonment, false arrest, or malicious prosecution, they lose immunity.
