stopped studying math ages ago and still kinda catching up with the drama, but the navier-stokes stuff has me a tad depressed today. concerning for the future math research ecosystem, but mainly I don't want to live in a world where intellectual labor is made an adjunct to fixed capital in this way

solidarity with oppressed peoples of the United Kingdom. Everyone deserves security, a dignified life and a government that represents their interests. we hope the country will achieve the stability its peoples need, and that they will have a prime minister one day who actually finishes their term.

unfortunately TDOV always kinda feels like one of those niche largely online microholidays like Pi Day or May the Fourth Be With You. don’t really think about it or register it until you stumble on to the same trite genres of posts or a cutesy flyer at the library and go ohhh right

Definitely not a central concern of his but it is there! He has quite a few remarks on Wagner in Antinomies of Realism, there's the extended analysis of Mahler's Sixth in Allegory and Ideology, and ofc there are remarks on Schoenberg in Marxism and Form (though as an explication of Adorno)

To lose Backhaus, Habermas and Kluge so close together—regardless of my ambivalence about some of them I'm feeling very saddened by the loss of these giants of the German New Left now, at a moment when intellectual life is everywhere being vitiated

Most people rejected his message. They hated Freud because he told them the truth.

an excerpt from Elizabeth Roudinesco's "Freud in His Time and Ours (Catherine Porter, trans.) It reads "At times, Freud was unable to repress an unjustified but ferocious anti-Americanism, so that he would declare, for example, that his disciples from across the Atlantic were good for nothing but bringing him dollars. Once he declared before a stunned interlocutor that the Statue of Liberty could be replaced “by a monkey holding up a Bible.” On another occasion he asserted before one of his students who was in analysis with him
that the Americans were so stupid that their mode of thinking could be reduced to a ridiculous syllogism: “You Americans are like this: garlic’s good; chocolate’s good— let’s put a little garlic on chocolate and eat it!”

This stuff is so infuriating. As a young person figuring this stuff out not once did someone suggest to me I might be trans. but once I came out as trans people *repeatedly* suggested to me that I might just be a feminine gay boy or nonbinary or something less extreme. as if we were negotiating
