The Guardian article that I saw, Helen Horton's, was without background, context and history, and failed to present the different perspectives.

For decades councils have in some small way reduced the impact of hundreds of nightly drunken & tipsy folk on neighbourhoods by imposing a reasonable ratio of seated to standing drinkers in pubs and bars. Not new, not a ban. Just the usual compromise between businesses and residents in mixed areas.

It doesn't exist. Fake news.

For decades local communities protection against nightly hordes of drunken people has been helped by limiting numbers of standing drinkers in pubs & bars. Legally, there should be a balance between residential liveability & business interests. Businesses & Mayor Khan, must start to respect that.

No.10 & Mayor Khan know full well Westminster council didn't intend to ban vertical drinking. Nasty dirty politics in action her, Khan seeks excuses for 2nd power-grab. His mad obsession with turning the West End into an outsized 24-hour drinking swamp. Impoverished idea for boosting London economy.

Another journalist not bothering to check on the truth? I used to have respect for The Guardian. Not any more.

vrichd.bsky.social @vrichd.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Keeping vertical drinking provision down to a reasonable and fair proportion of customer numbers at bars and pubs has been part of the strategy for keeping a balance between alcohol industry and local residents' interests for decades. It is not a new idea, and no 'ban' was called for at any time.

The Guardian should have apologised by now for publishing this badly-researched, ill-informed and inaccurate article.

I can’t believe we’re still having a debate about whether there’s a trade off between job creation and measures to green the economy. There isn’t. The evidence was clear years ago - a green economy creates far more jobs than the fossil fuel economy it replaces. Come on Labour, catch up …

No one expected Keir Starmer to solve our pressing problems overnight. But what we did expect – and had every right to expect – was that he would lay out a clear vision and roadmap for doing so. Instead, we’ve had drift, appeasement and a startling absence of ideas, values and ambition. 🧵1/6

A please @labouruk.bsky.social, stop saying that it's up to us to stop Reform. YOU could stop a Reform government in 2029, by introducing the proportional representation so many in the country have been clamouring for. The only way Farage can win is through our crazy first-past-the-post system.

This, loves, is the raspberry patch I planted nearly 15 years ago, when Jan and I were still living in London and a life in France was a distant dream. Just a couple of canes for £1 at ASDA. My dad lives in that flat now, and he reckons he picked 2,000 raspberries last year.
A sunlit, wild-looking, green thicket of raspberry canes growing in a raised bed in a paved London garden.
