Today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt is ‘faith’. This gravestone, featuring hands held in the position of Kohanim blessing, is in the Jewish Burial Ground in Westgate Hill, Newcastle.
A weathered gravestone, with grass and daisies in the foreground. The top layer of darkened sandstone has mostly come off, leaving a golden colour beneath on which the lettering, in Hebrew and English, is still legible. At the top of the stone are two hands in the position of a Kohanim Blessing.

I loved the queer rep lighting design at the Queens Hall for Grace Petrie’s gig yesterday.
Three stacked photos of a band playing on a stage, with lighting in different queer pride flags- the top one is a rainbow, the middle is blue purple and pink, the bottom is light blue, light pink, and white.

If you’ve ever travelled with me, you’ll know that I always try to visit the local old cemetery wherever I am. Today’s #31DaysOfGraves comes from Faro, Portugal, where my partner got dragged round two cemeteries and an ossuary! The prompt is ‘language’.
A white gravestone featuring columns, ivy garlands, a serpent, and a Gothic arch. The inscription is in Portuguese.

‘Bricks’ is today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt. - Here’s the late summer evening sun streaming through the arches in the colonnade at Brompton casting shadows of gravestones.
A long view through an arched brick built colonnade. The sun is coming from the left, casting Golden Arches on the darker brick walls, and each arch contains a shadow of a gravestone.

I have *so many* photos i could use for today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt of ‘unusual’, but I’ve gone with this one from my local cemetery. I’ve never seen another quite like it. - Agnes Elder died aged 19 in 1866, and is buried here alongside her parents, David and Catherine.
A view of a gravestone - it’s a column with a spiral going around it, topped with what look like 4 turrets and the spiral forming a point. To the sides are four standard sized and shaped gravestones. There’s grass in the foreground and trees behind.Another angle of the same gravestone A closeup of the same gravestone

Happy #MementoMoriMonday to one and all! - I took this photo six years ago - my gravestone photography has improved since then! Sadly, the old cemetery in South Queensferry is now locked due to vandalism and inaccessible to the public.
An old and weathered gravestone featuring a skull, two cherubs blowing trumpets, a winged head, an hourglass, and crossed shovels.

Today’s prompt in #31DaysOfGraves is ‘ordinary’. - These images are from St John at Hackney Churchyard Garden, where the headstones of hundreds of ordinary Londoners from the 1800s have been moved to the perimeter of the space, creating an open public park for current ordinary Londoners.
The corner of a London park, parched grass surrounded by a red brick wall with trees and buildings beyond. In front of the wall are repositioned grey gravestones, stood in rows three deep. Two rows of grey, weathered gravestones against a red brick wall. #31DaysOfGraves day 11 - ‘humorous” - I did a genuine double take at this monument in Dunbar with the unfortunate loss of a letter… - The photo is cropped so as not to show the names of the deceased, I don’t mean to be disrespectful, please take this with lighthearted intention.
A grey granite gravestone surrounded by yew branches. The letter I has fallen off the word arise, so part of the inscription now reads “arse shine”

#31DaysofGraves day 10: ‘missing’. - This is from a visit along the coast to Culross back in January. A lot of the memorials here date from the 1700’s, and some are so heavily worn and weathered that the inscriptions are now entirely missing.
A heavily worn old tombstone set into a tall wall. It has columns on each side, and an arched top. Along the upper horizontal section there are carved skulls and crossed bones, but in the area where the names would be, all there is is worn away sandstone.

Day 9 of #31DaysOfGraves prompt is ‘lettering’. - I like the cursive script on William Blake’s gravestone at Bunhill Fields. This marker has only been in place since 2018, following work to identify the exact location of his burial. The previous stone is still there too.
A pale rectangular tombstone laid flat in the ground surrounded by darker coloured bricks. Flowers have been placed around the edge of the stone. Grass can be seen to the top and right sides, and there are some fallen autumn leaves.A simple gravestone set in stone paving to William Blake and his wife Catherine, stating that their remains lie nearby. To the right is a glass iced tea bottle holding a bunch of yellow roses.

Back to Abney Park again for today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt of ‘animal’. I have lots of pictures of graves featuring animal imagery and wildlife in cemeteries, but Susannah and Frank Bostock’s lion tugs at my heartstrings. - The second picture is a digital drawing I made (no AI!) a while back.
A large white tomb with a carved sleeping lion on top of it set among trees. A digital drawing on the sleeping lion from the previous picture. The background is a beige, the drawing is dark green and was made using Procreate. The effect is a detailed charcoal drawing.

For today’s prompt of ‘home’ for #31DaysOfGraves, I’ve chosen Charlotte Sharman’s headstone in Abney Park. - She set up and ran several homes for young girls who’d been orphaned to provide care and education. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlot...
A rectangular gravestone in grey granite with carved leaves and flowers to each side of the inscription. The surface is green with lichen, and it’s surrounded by ivy and brambles.

The inscription reads:

IN AFFECTIONATE AND ENDURING REMEMBRANCE OF CHARLOTTE SHARMAN, WHO DIED ON DECEMBER 5th 1929 IN THE 98th YEAR OF HER AGE.
FOUNDER AND FOR 67 YEARS
HONORARY SUPERINTENDENT OF THE HOME FOR ORPHAN GIRLS TO WHICH SHE DEVOTED HER LIFE INSPIRED BY A NOBLE FAITH AND A BOUNDLESS LOVE FOR LITTLE ONES LEFT DESOLATE.

Today’s prompt in #31DaysOfGraves is ‘weather’. - Last year, I had a holiday in Mallorca with my mum. The day I chose to explore along the coast on a rental bike was wild and stormy, but I still explored the local cemetery.
A view of a cemetery in Mallorca, looking down a marble path with rows of graves to each side, there are mountains in the background, the ground is wet, and there are storm clouds overhead.

I’m not forgetting it’s #MementoMoriMonday! - This little skull is part of a large ornate tomb in Greyfriars, Edinburgh, where I had a lovely autumnal walk almost a year ago.
A small curved skull facing to the left is positioned on the side of a large tomb. Only a little of the tomb is visible, a carved column. It’s dark stone against a lighter stone wall.

Day 5 of #31DaysOfGraves prompt is ‘vehicle’. - Richard Tams’ memorial has an engraved scene featuring what I think is a Romani vardo, though please correct my terminology if it’s not accurate, I mean to be respectful.
A black gravestone with gold lettering. At the top is an engraved scene featuring a Romani wagon, a cart, and horses.

I had SO MANY photos to choose from for today’s #31DaysOfGraves prompt - ‘entrance’. - This is the way down into the catacombs at Brompton. I’ve added a closeup of the gates, because the imagery is 🔥

#31DaysOfGraves - ‘glass’ - There were various pieces of old broken ceramics and glass on the overgrown paths around St John’s, and being an absolute magpie for shiny things, this one caught my attention.
My hand holding a piece of broken glass with most of the word ‘Newcastle’ on it.

I visited Belle Elmore’s grave yesterday, and lacking as I was in secateurs or gardening gloves, cut back the brambles with my embroidery scissors. Her resting place deserves the care. If you haven’t read Hallie Rubenhold’s ‘Story of a Murder’, it’s well worth your attention.
A side by side before and after photo of a grave site. On the left, the space has brambles growing over it, and in the right, they’ve been cleared. A close up of the inscription on a gravestone, reading:
