MESTRA comes out in two weeks and I'm so excited to have these gorgeous editions in my hands! Huge thanks to brilliant artists Allison Saltzman (US) and David Mann (UK) who designed them!
A smiling author with brown hair and glasses sits on the floor in front of a low bookcase. On top is a statue of an ancient Egyptian style falcon, and a pile of books that include research material for her current novel about Persephone. In her hands, the author proudly holds two editions of her new short story MESTRA. Both are small, hardcover books. The one on the left, the US edition, is a burgundy ombre background with gold flourishes, and a gold bird in flight. The one on the right is a fiery red, with the title written down the center, surrounded by gold foliage and two birds.

Unfortunately, as is happening to lots of authors now, someone is impersonating me in spam emails asking to stay in touch. So if you get something out of the blue from me it's probably fake, I'm sorry. I wish I had the bandwidth to be sending friendly emails just because! Sif says, stay vigilant.
A beautiful, queenly, long-haired brown tabby cat regards the camera with wide eyes. Only her face and ruff are visible, she is backlit by sunlight, sitting in a cardboard cat bed. Her alert look seems to say: don't fall for scams! Stay vigilant!

It’s Long Covid Awareness Day, and my sixth anniversary of being sick from it. My first impulse for commemorating this was to set all the meds and treatments I’ve tried to the tune of We Didn’t Start the Fire, or Tom Lehrer’s The Elements (which uses I Am the Very Model of A Modern Major General).

My new short story, MESTRA, comes out as a standalone this September! I rediscovered this myth from Ovid while working on my Persephone novel, and it absolutely electrified me. In case you want to pre-order, thank you from the bottom of this author's heart, links are here! linktr.ee/madeline.mil...
The cover of a new hardback short story edition. Rich red background, darker at top and bottom, brighter in the middle. A gold outline of a sparrow-ish bird flies upwards at center left, with wings spread, trailing abstract gold curlicues from its tail feathers. Block letters at top read: Madeline MiIler Author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller The Song of Achilles. Block letters at bottom read Mestra, A Short Story.

A wonderful, resonant essay from @thesicktimes.org about how we can better listen to anyone going through something catastrophic. "Avoiding the topic feels absurd — like I’m standing in quicksand, and we’re chitchatting over glasses of lemonade as I slowly sink." thesicktimes.org/2025/11/28/y...

I know it’s not Caturday but I was late with the evening treat and found this waiting for me.
Three long-haired cats face the camera grouped close together on a bed. Far left cat is a brown and black tabby who looks long-suffering. Middle cat is a white and grey tabby with a baby face who is happy to be included. Far right cat is also a brown tabby but with more gray in his coat. He is alert to any motion the photographer may make in the direction of the treats.

Happy Independent Bookstore day! It's always a great day to support indie bookstores, but I'm glad for this chance to celebrate them especially! I am so grateful for all they do for communities, readers, and writers. Support indies with online ordering too--through their websites or bookshop.org

Thought I would share my new coping mechanism pic. My child asked a good friend to knit a pink hat for our cats, and he graciously agreed. We don’t usually put clothes on our cats because they are NOT fans, but Muffin was very sleepy and agreed to model.
A long-haired brown tabby cat is curled up on a white coverlet with small blue dots. The cat is wearing a bright pink knitted beanie with holes for ears. The cat’s eyes are partially closed. He looks sleepy and contented. And very sweet.

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!
A poster for the economic blackout on February 28. It is a big red Jack rabbit on an aqua blue back ground. It says economic blackout in hand done black type. There are two black speech bubbles. One says “don’t buy stuff Friday February 28th. The other says we have power. Below it says No Amazon, Walmart, target, gas food, gas. Below that it says OK small business, use cash. Designed by Martha Rich.

Love these three short videos from fellow Long Covider Matt McGorry on 4 common Covid myths. He nails it on all counts. I wear an N95 mask in all public spaces to protect myself from Covid, flu, and other viruses, and to make sure I'm not spreading them to others.

Okay, I cannot recommend 5calls.org enough. Enter your address and it will find all your reps (federal and state). AND give you a list of issues to call about AND which reps to call about each of them AND a little script for each, in case it's helpful. They have an app, too.

The sharp increase of book bans in libraries and schools the last couple of years is truly disturbing--and it's another thing we must fight. So many brilliant, powerful, and vital books are on these lists, including the work of @pronounced-ing.bsky.social. Book challenges are also way up. (1/4)

Sif is five years old today and still tolerating us all (barely).
A close up of a cat, a long-haired brown Siberian tabby, draped over a person’s shoulder. She regards the camera with an inscrutable and direct gaze. Perhaps annoyed. Perhaps tolerant. Perhaps contemplating her inevitable win in the yearly Ruff contest among the three cats. Her whiskers are long and curved like Salvador Dali’s mustache.

I never ended up joining TikTok but I remain incredibly grateful to booktok and all the people who spoke about my books there. It meant the world to me during some very difficult years. Sending much love and so many thanks to all the passionate readers, now and always.

Just saying hello, from me and the cat crew. I’m so glad to be seeing so many old friends here.
Three fluffy cats on cardboard cat beds. In the back glares a golden brown tabby named Sif who does not suffer fools. In the front piled on a single bed is a sweet grey and brown tabby named Muffin and a white and grey cat who looks like a handful.
