Union Pacific is trying to merge/buy Norfolk Southern, if it happens it will be the biggest railroad merger in history, and will make UP the first to have a true Transcontinental railroad from East to West Coasts. I talk about all of the details here:

Many of my 25-40yo friends are only able to buy homes because older folks are moving out of smaller convenient urban city homes to buy larger gaudy sprawl homes with a garden the size of a tennis court. All the power to them. Sprawl should be taxed more for their maintenance burden, but I digress 😅

Yeah trying to explain that a range of house prices and types provides economic mobility for many people is often missed. It can't all be luxury homes but it also can't ignore working young families, downsizing seniors who want some bells and whistles etc

Mike Rogers has the audacity to lie to you about his plan like he didn't vote 4 times to stop you from getting cheaper medication from Canada, take $1M from Big Pharma, and vote 19 times to keep prescription drug prices higher. GTFOH.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

To be clear it is, to my understanding, a privately managed publicly funded transit system. The town staff themselves do not operate the bus themselves. This information may be out of date, in which case the main comment stands aside from private operation under public contract. Apologies

The only thing worse than not having a reliable transit system is having a transit system that disappears. Having zero redundancy and zero plan is not great. The mayor's comments are laughable when they themselves approved single source private managed Transit with no redundancy. Mayor is a 🤡

The changes to the Canada Labour Code in this new bill are “without precedent in Canadian law and they’re without precedent even amongst our trading partners in the G7.” “It provides the complete and unlimited discretion to the federal minister to decide who gets to go on strike and who does not.”

I think we should go back to niche forums text only with a 16x16 px profile pic. Social media has done some good, but in general has destroyed sensible discourse and is ruining democracy, inflamed by proto fascist tech oligarchs. Decentralized like bluesky*, gander, and mastodon are much better.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

Have you heard of St. John's where councils refuse to remove even a single lane of traffic or even parking for a bike lane, and instead obliterate 150 year old trees just to widen a road and add a shared use path? Grass is greener I guess but I love cycling in HRM (pen and darthmouth core).

The European Union is tightening the regulatory backdoor through which US automakers have been quietly importing around 7k large SUVs and pickup trucks/year. “The revised rules, expected to launch in 2027, are designed to close loopholes that Brussels says allow unsafe vehicles onto European roads.”

this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

What's wild are Canadian cities of a ~million do 4-15 times ridership per capita compared to US cities of 7-15 million. We don't really have 25km of 1-10 acre private well/septic lots spreading out from city cores here. That's good IMO 😊 Then there's goats of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver 🚃🚌🚲😍

A new St. John's suburb has 11 lots/ha. Car dependent hell. No transit or no bike lanes. It'll lose the city 70M$ in 50yrs. Another mid city area has bike lanes, transit AND 100% car access but is 50 lots/ha but makes money even with single D's. Cara can be a part but it can't be the only option.

Delivery and freight sometimes need space, but in all reality, most driver infractions are not penalized so drivers continue to break the law. Remove a drive lane. Until vehicle's get repo'd, licenses revoked, and proportional to income fines levied, change won't happen fast enough.

I have a 14km drive to work (bus doesn't go there) and the time to travel is fully dependent on a traffic light, not my speed. Inside North American cities, every local street could be reduced to 20/hr and it'd only add 2-4mins to commutes but it would increase safety on 85% city streets.

Speeding doesn't actually save you meaningful time. All it really accomplishes is aggressively increasing the chances that you kill yourself or someone else outside your vehicle. It's a mathematically flawed, entirely selfish risk.

With our kids now #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a LOT of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school as a result. HT Ian Lockwood. Spread the word.
Cartoon of a mom and dad with a kid in front of a minivan. The parents are saying “there is too much traffic for Billy to walk to school, so we drive him.” The caption at the bottom says “traffic inducing traffic.” Let kids walk and bike to school, and tell your leaders to make that trip safe and enjoyable for kids and families. #LetKidsWalk #LetKidsBike

Bring European Cars to Canada and start penalizing large trucks and SUVs from the US as the lethal weapons that they are. You think the US can handle losing 15% of its truck and SUV market? That's 150,000 us jobs gone. That's 7 plants shuttered. That's an industry upheaval.

Cars that have an overabundance of safety warnings that just make beeping noises are essentially noise and are often ignored. There's a reason aircraft have different words and sounds for different warnings.

Man our ioniq6 is such a terrible car. The buttons are a smooth touch surface with no demarcations, while the text is sky blue on bright silver. I cannot even see the buttons in the sun. It is a physical hazard and if I had the money I'd sue the shit out of Hyundai for making a dangerous car.

My biggest issue cycling in St. John's is the lack of safety; being forced to vehicular cycle. Next issue is the lack of secure racks to lock an e-bike. The anxiety of checking to see if someone is stealing it is too damn high. My old employer would not put in a bike rack. I put it in my office

For people who use 'self driving' features in your car, you clearly don't want to drive so might I suggest public transit? Government adapts too slowly. We need autonomous driving banned inside Canadian cities. We also need to ensure companies like Tesla can't sell their data like flock does.

It's absolutely the correct safe thing to do. In most major NA cities, local streets are rarely more than 800m from a collector/ arterial/ highway. Reducing from 50km/hr to 20km/hr for 1600 total metres is only about 3 minutes longer in a vehicle but can make 85% of roads safer. Smart safe policy
