I didn't set up my camera mount on the telescope so that people could look at it with their eyes, but here's some photos. They aren't great 😅

What a fantastic regatta day! I biked down from the airport area faster than I could if I drove or took the bus. Bonus is I got to bypass all the construction traffic returning. I guarantee i got home faster than anyone in a car. The traffic was dark red (+15 min delay) but it took me 1 minute 😁💪

After reading the abstract, it's unclear if they factored in the walk shed of the systems versus each other, or if they looked at total length of the systems. Also I'd be curious if right of way priority was analyzed. Like Lyon pops in mind. So much tramway and Metro. Very lovely read 😊😊

There's gotta be a venn diagram for that group of men who park trucks on crosswalks and also don't respect women.

Not to mention all the wankpanzers don't fit in parking garages. You'd think all the rough and tough working folk would be fine leaving their emotional support vehicles on the road with their rugged durability. Every truck should require a special license and be commercial insurance.

This is a map showing every single population centre as defined Provincially, from Nain to Margaree. The bars are proportional to each-other, with a cap of the 111750 being attributed to St. John's. The bottoms of each bar are the 'centre point' of the population cluster. #nlpoli #sjpoli
I think this is a neat way to display the population. All the data comes from statistics Canada from the 2021 census.

The bottom centre of each bar is the geographic center of each population centered as defined in the Stats Canada and NL databases.

As a reminder to people, there should be a census next year. It will be a very important statistics snapshot post Covid. The Census is critical to understanding where funds are needed, and where population centres have shifted.

Then I get home to #stjohns. There is no indication there is even a bus at the airport. No signs or symbols. If you did wander around you'd just end up seeing one sign for a bus that runs once an hour One way Uber/taxi in #YYT is more expensive than a transit pass in all Montréal island for a day 🫠

Myles Russell @voterussell.ca · 17/08/2025
It's late at night. I'm a 25 minute walk to the Metro. Or just scan a bike 2 minutes away, ride directly to the Metro station in 5, pop the bike in the dock, get an alert in seconds that it's all good, then I hop on a subway then on a bus. Loads of night services. Montréal provides travel choice 😊

Myles Russell @voterussell.ca · 16/08/2025
JFC... I cannot explain how freeing it is to literally scan a bike at a dock, ride for like 10 minutes and lock into a different dock and you're done. Off for a pint and pasta. I don't really ride to restaurants or anything in #stjohns because finding a bike rack is a hassle.

I landed in Montreal. In less than 40 minutes without any deep knowledge of the system, I managed to get a day transit OPUS pass, hop on the express airport bus from YUL, get on a subway and walk to a specific store, just from the wayfinding maps. Reliable frequent transit is a game changer 😁

That's using $20,000,000 per km of light rail, centre median, surface ran. The high cost of many projects is simply keeping car capacity requiring complex construction, burying lines, building bridges and viaducts etc. Replace car space with light rail and we can build it cheap.
35m road row in St. John's NL. Each car lane is 4m wide. Well above the maximum suggested by the transport authority of Canada for an urban industrial road With the same right of way we can simply narrow and remove two lanes and replace that with surface light rail. No land is needed. No complex traffic configurations. This is what actually upgrading a roads capacity looks like

Four cars not following the rules for quidi vidi jammed up 4 buses with around 300 people on them for over 6 minutes. That's absolutely nuts. Those cars were not following the rules but the rules weren't being enforced.

"I think I'll take the bus to the regatta here in #stjohns on this beautiful day 😊. Well that doesn't seem like an efficient route." This is why people drive. People will travel however is easiest. We need a city that actually values real choice in mobility. Until then, driving will win.

What a fantastic critical mass bike ride on Friday here in #stjohns. Had a great chat with @justmarknichols.bsky.social about my campaign for city council. Also did a short interview with CBC talking about why having safe cycling infrastructure benefits who whole city. Next ride on Aug 29th! 🚲❤️

It is absolutely unacceptable that any trip along a transit route is about as slow as walking for over an hour. In this example I can bike to this destination about as fast as I can drive. The City of #stjohns has a priority and it's not people. That has to change.
Google maps navigation showing 17 minutes driving 21 minutes cycling an hour and 17 minutes by transit and an hour and 22 minutes walking in St. John's.

Here in St. John's we are seeing heavy civil construction costs increasing, but not as much as structure costs. We could just provide safe on street space by converting wide roads to more human scale streets. That can be done with Jersey barriers. It's the cheapest method to expand active space.
Typical St. John's road and it's very wide lanes that promote excessive speeding Simply reducing car lanes to what the transport authority of Canada recommends, for a city. Makes enough space to add cycling on both sides and more pedestrian spaceA full redesign could triple the number of people that can travel by making bus rapid transit space and removing two lanes for cars

This is a city street in #stjohns. It is one lane, one way, has a shared use path and is a third the width of a normal road. We can clearly have safer, people-first streets. Why can't a road like this have houses on it? Antiquated rules... That's it. Let's change those rules.

Myles Russell @voterussell.ca · 21/06/2025
Here on the East end of #stjohns, there are locations that are essentially barriers for those outside of a car. You'll see many families/ kids out walking around in stavanger or airport Heights but you never see them leave on foot/bike because it's simply not safe. We need a people-first city.
A very unwelcoming intersection for those outside of a car.

Just to give a perspective of the housing crisis in St. John's specifically. The illegal to build parts of the city (Cochrane St) provide 5 times the housing, provide 3 times the revenue per service metre, take up a third of the total space per unit, and all with the same cost. We need density.

One of the things we did with streets are for people is combine all of the regional municipalities zoning into one location. Our team decided that this was critical for us to be able to compare demographic and housing data throughout the entire region.

The upper part of Torbay road is used like a highway. I'd say the average speed is in excess of 65 km an hour. I don't even really fault drivers. I blame the road that is built like a highway. This could be such a better road if the goal was to move people. Redevelop for added housing.
Torbay road as it sits now is insanely wide. Every lane is a half a meter wider than the maximum recommended for an urban road for industrial traffic.A cross-section of Torbay road that is calmed and has a higher capacity. Adding bike lanes behind the sidewalks and having the outside Lane HOV only would be more efficient and safer.

This is not realistic to construct with our current budgets and function of the harbor, but it would be nice to have a segment of the waterfront be a linear park. Sadly harbour drive can't really be replaced (economically) but I can dream 😄

I've been wanting to use Metrobus transit to play hide-n-seek since the first season of it came out on @nebula.tv. If any locals are aware of this game and are interested, I'd gladly run a round for a laugh. It's the imperial measurement version, but that's fine. I also have a map in GIS 😊
