Penn State is losing to Northwestern 31-7 early in the 4th quarter. James Franklin wasn't the only problem at PSU. #PSUvsNW

Outflow from leading precipitation can sometimes mask a cold front. Tonight, outflow from precipitation veered winds to northwesterly ahead of the cold front. The cold front is father NW and exhibits a wind shift to NNE and a significant decrease in temperatures and dewpoints.

Models are more optimistic this morning, but I still can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm around noon today

Most model soundings near Champaign-Urbana support elevated convection, with a deep moist layer and little inhibition for parcels lifted from ~850 mb

The HRRR was the only high-res model failing to produce storms in Champaign-Urbana before sunset today and was a clear outlier. It was also wrong.

An already-hostile environment across much of the Atlantic is forecast to become even moreso by next weekend, with strong shear forecast across most of the tropical Atlantic from the Caribbean to Africa. This is at least partially owing to El Nino in the Pacific

Me: It's Friday evening after the first week of the semester. I'll relax and compare flood damage in Nepal to damage from the Joplin tornado. Atmosphere:

Parking stops (heavy, low to the ground, and anchored with steel rods) at the hospital were displaced and structural damage was so severe that the hospital had to be torn down, but the building still stood after the tornado. The site is now a memorial.

This flood was more destructive than any tornado. To put this in perspective, the St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO, was an EF-5 damage indicator after the 5/22/2011 tornado, with winds estimated at over 200 mph.

Before and after pictures of the six-story building on the China/Nepal border, featured in many widely-circulated videos of the catastrophe. This large building was erased from the face of the earth, and, unfortunately, I fear that many of the victims will never be found.

The HRRR initialized at 12, 18, and 00Z yesterday did quite well depicting the storms this afternoon in Champaign-Urbana (18Z shown). The model "lost" the storms overnight, with all runs from this morning incorrectly dissipating the storms instead (14Z shown).
