Nothing could possibly capture the inherent inanity of the current debate of the role and harms of AI in society better than these sentences.
In the wake of all this, several meme coin cryptocurrencies about the torture chamber have launched. Anyways, LLMS are not conscious and should not be
personified; the harms that humans using Al are causing to other humans is enormous, and is actually worth your time.

The article’s point, this really highlights the situation. If nobody involved in the production or use of software bothers to care about the harms and body count of software, literally any shitty technical practice or lack of accountability is on the table. It’s a race to the bottom of the abyss.
The tragedy of software engineering today is that we are actively engineering systems where neither the user nor the builder seems to have any interest in checking whether or not there's a body behind the door.

I've been messing around with the new @mysky.social feed since it was announced, and it seems pretty good. Out of the box it feels comparable to the For You feed (the current best of breed), except MySky is highly user-configurable, including a neat debug view to see why you are seeing certain posts

Can I provide some feedback? Calling the feed name "MySky by GreenEarth" causes the feed name to take up almost 30% of the horizonal screen real-estate in the feed switcher. Would you be open to renaming it's label "MySky". It's kind of user-hostile/UX anti-pattern to label it with such a long name.

This is multiple decades of these people explicitly angling for exactly this. Rumor my ass.

A comic titled 'Hug Bot' by Perry Bible Fellowship. The comic depicts in order:

1) Two scientists talking next to a cute pink and yellow robot with a heart-shaped chest cavity and flower-shaped eyes, saying, "This is adorable: Tugboat is trying to install a nucleo-gravitational hyper-crystal into his hug-capacitor"

2) A close-up shot of Hugbot saying, "TIME FOR GROUP HUG."

3) Hugbot with his arms open wide for a hug, creating a gravity field that is pulling the scientists and random pieces of paper and paperclips towards the robot. The scientists have alarmed looks on their faces.

4) A wide shot of the planet Earth, that has a giant crater in it that covers a quarter of the planet's surface.

As an aside, I got the phrase “standard substandard education” from a line from Tron (1982) where the fascist computer program Sark is telling the enslaved programs that they will receive such an education so they will be useful but unable to prevent themselves from being derezzed on the Game Grid.

The defining feature of this moment is not loss of control. The defining feature of this moment is everyone with any modicum of power collectively deciding to cede control to one of a variety of apocalyptic fascists who openly claim that they want to bring about the end of the world.
HE DEFINING FEATURE of this moment is a loss of control. Panic emanating from AI researchers, resentment felt by average Americans—all of it is part of the AI crunch.

There’s a theory of information behavior called “small worlds” (not to be confused w/ the similarly named but v. different concept in network science) described by Chatman in her study of the information worlds of maximum-security prisoners that bears on the way of life of the Extremely Online.
Inmates form a "small world," a closed community where private opinion yields to a shared reality its accompanying information-seeking behavior. 2! Social norms established by inmates determine the importance or triviality of a piece of information; as such, information that affects prisoners in an immediate way (such as illness while medical staff are off-duty) gain importance, while information about the outside world becomes trivial. 61[5] Chatman concludes that life in the round disfavors information seeking behavior, as there is no need to search for outside information.

While I’m loathe to share b/c substack, this is indexical of our participatory make-believe society where we are under the rule of authoritarian groupthinks fueled by supremacist propaganda so powerful that it supersedes even rationality and greedy self-interest; like running a profitable business.
What's happened to going to the Walgreens or Target is a store-sized version of what's happened to living in America. It's the experience of being subject to the decisions of a ruling class that responds to every challenge with authoritarianism, greed, and the same levels of poise and wisdom as an inbred Pomeranian.

In military and police contexts, a warning shot is an intentionally harmless artillery shot or gunshot with intent to enact direct compliance and order from a hostile perpetrator or enemy force. It is recognized as signaling intended confrontations on land, sea, and air.

As an analogy, a "warning shot" can be used to describe any action of declaration, especially a demonstration of power, intended or perceived as a last warning before hostile measures.
