Bright shades were possible long before the discovery of synthetic. This block printed floral dress, c1830, used a madder based dye called Turkey red, vibrant & distinctive. It has a hidden bodice panel for nursing a baby, one of those all round fascinating garments #VandA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Unlike the more structured, formal stomachers of the c18th, this survival from the #1720s is softer and more rounded. The scrolling, Baroque decoration has been hand stitched in Italian quilting, both subtle and striking @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

#Ootd is this 1920s Callot Soeurs dress. As stated before, they were known for their layering of various fabrics. Zooming in, we can see the multiple fabrics from a cream silk, orange floral brocade, coral silk, and golden tulle. All with a coral beaded waist. #Fashionhistory
