Volcano seismology! Seismic volcanology! Lunatic fringe, regardless. Carnegie EPL and SZ4D (posts are my own).

Seismology meets motorsports! Turns out the Earth watched last Sunday's Grand Prix in DC too. 🙂 The amplitude of vibrations on a nearby seismometer mirrors the action on the track. Green-flag racing, cautions, pit activity, and the final push all clearly visible. #IndyQuake #Seismology #IndyCar

This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.

Tuesday's #IAVCEI2025 personal highlight was Miriam Reiss' fantastic plenary talk on how volcanic tremor provides new insight into magma-fluid dynamics! Tuesday's lowlight was accidentally locking myself and my flatmates out of our Airbnb for 5+ hours....

Does anyone know what's up with the M4+ earthquakes off Greenland's east coast? Four of them in the past week. Landslides?

Great to see this one finally out! Another nice example of how petrology and geophysics combine to illustrate how volcanoes work.

Happy to see this article finally out in Nature Communications! Sam Scott did some really cool work on an awesome FTIR dataset captured during an amazing lava fountain sequence at Fagradalsfjall, Iceland, in 2021. He came up with a really neat model to explain the activity! 🌋⚒️
