In #MathsToday, Year 13 Further Maths had a lesson in the morning to revise for an afternoon Core Pure 1 assessment. I printed off a nice double-sided A3 revision mat. There's something about that format that I find feels more approachable than 50 questions in a list! interwovenmaths.com/mats/cp1

That was another big reason to start memorising pieces more, so that I could pick up a guitar when I'm not home and play them! Maybe it could be described as a foundational and mostly unconscious floor to your musical/mathematical current ability. It can be reinforced, expanded, and raised.

Benefit is that it doesn't care if you have ax+b or a(x+b) or x/a+b or (x+b)/a. You deal with it by getting to your newly desired x-coordinates.

1) work back from the values bx+c (often I'll define it for convenience, such as θ) wants to be to the particular values of x that give them 2) map the outputs from those inputs to the desired transformed function You then see the transformations happen to the original points as you determine x&y

Drawing it up with a table of values for helps a lot. Starting with a table for x and the base f(x), we transform to some "a f(bx + c) + d". So, we know what inputs to f give particular outputs using f, so we do two things:

In #MathsToday, Year 10 did some some Interwoven Related Calculations and then started on my all-new Algebra Fluency page - answering 1000+ questions between them! interwovenmaths.com/algebra It also gave me lots of data to know where to focus lessons in the Algebra topic we're about to start.
A maths worksheet titled “Task 1.3.3 Adjusted Multiplications”. It begins with “Given that 32 × 45 = 1440” and presents six questions using this fact: calculate 1/32 + 1/45; solve 32x = 1440; find the area of a 32 m by 45 m rectangle; find 32% of £45; share £1440 in the ratio 44:1; and expand 32(45x − 1).

A second section headed “Hence…” gives six related questions with adjusted values: calculate 1/16 + 1/45; solve 32x = 1472; find the area of a 32 m by 4.5 m rectangle; find 33% of £45; share £1395 in the ratio 44:1; and expand 31(45x − 1).A screenshot of https://interwovenmaths.com/algebra question

There is definitely still some clunkiness there with scalar products, such as somewhat needing to identify the backwards directions ahead of time to separate it out that feels very impractical.
010
Alex ~ VIC Maths Notes @vmnalex.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
In that instance, I'd be thinking that speed is the magnitude of the velocity so velocity could be written as |speed|*(unit vector of velocity) where speed is non-negative. Basically forcing the unit velocity vector to stay pointing to the unit circle to identify a direction of motion.
110
Alex ~ VIC Maths Notes @vmnalex.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
So, you could say you're scaling the negative of the vector to separate the directionality. The scalar product measures how much two vectors act in the same direction. So, when the scalar product is negative, it's saying that the vectors are acting in broadly opposite directions.
010
Alex ~ VIC Maths Notes @vmnalex.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Two related thoughts: a scalar is what scales/stretches a vector. If we relate to transformations, then a negative scalar is applying a reflection as well as scaling the length up or down. I'm sure some will specify that they are separate, so scalar>0 similar to constant of proportionality>0.

Questions would be if that's worth considering before non-monic quadratic in general (a and c not 1) and whether it helps understand the non-monic factorisation any better than going straight there.

Fun thing I was playing around with recently x² + 5x + 6 = (1x + 2)(1x + 3) 6x² + 5x + 1 = (2x + 1)(3x + 1) That is x² + (p + q)x + pq = (1x + p)(1x + q) pqx² + (p + q)x + 1 = (px + 1)(qx + 1) So, no harder than monic factorising when the constant is 1. #mathstoday #mathschat

I'm also not a huge fan of inverse notation. However, x^-1 is the multiplicative inverse of x. So, it's not so far away from functional inverses as it could be. But when you can have a reciprocal/multiplicative inverse and an inverse that are different, yeah, it's problematic.
