Durante la Guerra Civil y la posterior dictadura, se estima que miles de personas desaparecieron y fueron fusiladas. Posteriormente, las arrojaron a 5.848 fosas comunes, de las cuales más de 4.300 siguen sin ser exhumadas. Una de esas fosas exhumadas es la de Silvestre Indias Carvajal.
