Moral realism and moral anti-realism just sound like slight rotations of the same object to me. I think you could measure the distance something is from eating and shitting by the amount of jargon on a given concept's Wikipedia article. I assume these concepts share a long path from there.

you're not going to get everyone living in their own little world of AI generated fiction and AI generated news and AI generated video games and etc because there is value in sharing experiences with other humans. there is also value in custom bespoke stuff, of course. a new equilibrium will form.

Some are suggesting you deliberately write inaccurate or confusing alt text, because they say this confuses AI scrapers that are analyzing images. The purpose of alt text is to help people who cannot see the image. Deliberately misrepresenting the image is a gross misuse of alt text. Don't do it.

The history of software is one of feminising and devaluing women's labour as nerdy, clerical, following specifications and requirements determined by men, and then valorising a presumed male hacker figure who disrupts and manfully disregards the needs of those relying on custodial maintenance work.

9/11/2001 I was a freshman in high school in Alabama, I wore a hijab. In gym class my teacher wheeled in a screen. Something horrible was happening. I watched, mouth agape as the second tower hit. We were silent. As that period reached an end, my name was announced on the loud speaker. 1/

I'm forever frustrated by how little frivolity and humanity we let slip into the K-12 history curriculum. We spend so much time teaching history as a struggle for survival and dominance, we treat the act of being a person and enjoying life like an afterthought. Humans did more than try to survive.

Wait, wait, wait... Is major planet a common term in astronomy/astrophysics? If so, that fixes one half of my gripe. Pluto isn't a major planet? Works for me. I still want shoot lasers out of my eyes at "a (dwarf) planet isn't a planet" though.

it's genuinely staggering just how many people repress themselves based on the ideology that "sex is inherent, unchanging, and permanent no matter what one does". such ridiculousness that one simply wishes to take a hammer to "sex" and smash it to pieces to free all people.

The biggest thing that already-progressive and already-socialist, whatever, people have to understand is that this issue is not primarily a technical matter. Money has technical aspects, but it foremost is a *social* matter. The notion of money scarcity is integral to a *moral* framework.

Avoid using images of big blocks of text on your website. Using actual text instead of images of text will help screen reader users, but also will help people with reading disabilities. Using actual text helps users who need to adjust the text's font, color, size, and alignment.

"Taxpayer" implies the classist, racist role of "taxeater," and while it can technically be useful for modeling the behaviour of politicians—because many operate on the tax-to-spend model—it isn't even an accurate model of public spending for a government that creates its own money.

There is no "common pot" that we "pay into" when we pay currency in tax payments to our sovereign governments, and that entire narrative is a conservative-libertarian moral framework that reinforces the idea that the individual precedes the community. jamesarobichaux.substack.com/p/the-collec...
The “common pot” trope is very telling, as is the idea that we pay something “into” it. If we were all subsistence farmers, and grain or other produce from our farm were what we were “paying int” this “pot,” then what she said would make some sense, but why do we think of ourselves as independent subsistence farmers? Who told us to think that way? Who benefits from us thinking that way?

In this narrative, the public good is wholly dependent upon the confiscation of currency that people previously earned - and that somehow previously existed - in some market that itself somehow preexisted the state. Essentially, public spending becomes a form of forced charity from unconnected individuals, rather than a matter of predistributive justice.

This is not a truly progressive, emancipatory, universalist narrative about taxation. This is a libertarian caricature of a progressive narrative that, most tragically, nearly all progressive people have swallowed.

I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume this whole rant is based on a misunderstanding. It's bad because it mandates instead of funding some initiative and it's still unenforceable, but there is no verification in this bill. Ignoring the mandate it's actually fairly sensible.

A text post:

Useful Tips for Dealing with The Republican President

Bernice King, daughter of MLK and Coretta Scott King, posted this advice online around 2018. It's been edited:

1. Never use his name, EVER ("the Republican President" will do).
2. Remember this is a regime and he's not acting alone. It is a Republican regime.
3. Do not argue with those who support them - it doesn't work.
4. Focus on their POLICIES, not his orange-ness or that other one's makeup.
5. Keep your message positive. They want the country to be angry and fearful because this is the soil from which their darkest policies will grow.
6. No more helpless/hopeless talk.
7. Support artists and the arts.
8. Be careful to not spread fake news. Check it before posting.
9. Take care of yourselves, AND...
10. RESIST!

Plus, when you post or talk about the Republican President, assign his actions to "The Republican Administration" or "The Republicans". This will have several effects; the Republican legislators will either have to take responsibility for their association with him or stand up for what some of them don't like. He will not get the attention he craves.

Posted online in multiple places since 2018, including Reddit (r/Isbt) and Facebook.

Hopefully you have to imagine, but how does being told that the things harming you are just distractions feel? Do you feel safe around those people? Telling someone that is minimizing their suffering, belittling their existence, and centering yourself. Is that okay? Is that what you want to do?

There’s a specific mechanism in authoritarian movements that we’re seeing play out in real-time across American media and tech. It’s a simple rule: "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it." It is the logic of "scorched earth." It's the logic of the Nero Decree and it's happening right now. 🧵
