Into the Depths of the Trifid Nebula - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/cpST6C
This image shows the famous Trifid nebula in Sagittarius, also known as Messier 20 or NGC 6514. This particular nebula is a classic favourite among both visual and photographic observers due to its bright and colourful appearance. The complex cloud displays an unusual combination of both red emission and blue reflection areas as well as numerous intricate dark patterns. The nebula is located 9000 light years away in the direction of the Milky Way centre. The entire area is sprinkled with thousands of stars and fainter dusty and nebulous areas throughout. Another dark cloud shows up silhouetted against the starry background to the left of the Trifid.

Near the top of the Trifid itself a curious example of gas evaporation can be seen. A dense stalk, 8 light years from the central cluster, is emerging from the edge of the bubble surrounding the central cluster, and in the other direction a powerful stellar jet from a young star, HH 399 embedded in the gas, is shooting out in a direction towards the bottom right. The bright young stars in the central cluster emit strong radiation which eats away the surrounding gas and dust. The stalk only appears because a denser region lies at its very tip and protects a thin strip of the cloud from this interstellar erosion. The Hubble Space Telescope has imaged this fascinating area in high resolution. Also, the proper motion of the irradiated plasma in this jet has been measured and an interesting paper has been published detailing these ...

Protostar in LDN 1527 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2o1cFqj
Update: Simeon Schmauß over on Twitter (@stim3on) recommended G'MIC for taking care of the horizontal noise / banding. It worked pretty great. There's a Photoshop plugin for it, too.

Wanted to process my own version of this one, since nebular landscapes are some of my favorite views. Having a hard time with the linear noise pattern, especially near the top of the image.

In the center of this view is a newly forming star crossed by a dark disk of dust (say that three times fast!) which is casting shadows to the left and right, and allowing cones of light out the top and bottom. Think of it like a light bulb inside of a donut with a bunch of fog. Though the infrared light can penetrate much of the dust, there are clues in the image that show some of the dust is still too thick to see through. At the lower right especially are a lot of background galaxies. On the left, the background galaxies are fewer, and what we see are dimmer, so we can tell there is more dust there.

You can see the official release here. They've got a much better description than I could ever write.

Orange "screen": NIRCam/F444W-F470N (not arithmetic)
Red: NIRCam/F444W
Green: NIRCam/F335M
Blue: NIRCam/F200W, F187N, F115W

The Trifid Nebula with the INT - From Ángel López-Sánchez - flic.kr/p/2jWP5kf
The Trifid Nebula (M 20) in H-alpha (green) [O III] (blue) and [S II] (red filters) using the WFC (Wide Field Camera) instrument at the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain) in 2005.

This was one of the very first colour images using professional telescopes that I processed when I was doing my PhD at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Spain). I used this image for illustrating my PhD Thesis and for explaining H II regions. The data were taken by Sergio Simón-Díaz as a part of a study of Galactic HII regions we were conducting at the moment.

This is a reprocessing of the data I've done in 2020, where I performed some cleaning of saturated stars, color correction, removing artefacts, hot pixels, and selective smart sharpen for revealing some extra details. However, I can't find the original FITS data of the individual channels, so this has been done over the Photoshop file I created in 2006, when I first created the colour image.

The data is actually a mosaic including the blue reflection nebula (at its top in this image), but I have not reprocessed (yet) the other ccd as it is very tricky (plenty of artefacts and a very saturated star). I hope to eventually do it.

Thor's Helmet - NGC 2359 - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/dMQknj
This delicate emission nebula is located in the constellation of Canis Major at a distance of about 15,000 light years. The nebula is illuminated by a central star in its last stage of life. This is a massive so called Wolf-Rayet star which is shedding its outer layers of gas at an extremely high rate due to intense radiation pressure. Wolf-Rayet stars are thought to represent a brief stage of evolution near the end of life for giant super massive stars - the last unstable phase before the star explodes as a brilliant supernova.

In the case of Thor's Helmet a large expanding bubble has formed around the bright central star. Interaction with giant molecular clouds in the area have contributed to the overall intricate shape of the nebula and large bow shock structures radiate out from the bubble in several directions. The nebula is some 30 light years in diameter and the strong blue-green colour is due to OIII emission near the star.

This entire spectacle lies embedded in a dense star field consisting of thousands of coloured jewels each casting their own contrasting light onto this dramatic interstellar scenery.

HH 1-2 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/QBo9ep
Herbig-Haro objects 1 & 2 in narrowband near-infrared, narrowband visible, and a single old wideband red filter. This is a complicated mess that I admit to taking a lot of artistic liberty with. Part of the reason for this being that the jets were moving, and I not only shifted the individual moving parts around from the near-infrared epoch to match the visible epoch, I also completely deleted the moving parts from the wideband filter (imaged 20 years ago).

I felt that this combination of filters created the most compelling version of the image. It is a noise-ridden, resolution-mismatched mess up close, but I sure do enjoy it scaled down. It probably looks fine in the gallery here, but is kind of painful to look at up close. You have been warned.

The infrared data comprising the red component of this image was taken only two days ago. It's awesome! This is another dataset that was released immediately to the public due to it being part of some pre-JWST observations. Later on, we'll get to compare these to what JWST will see. I sincerely hope the views of this live up to the hype. I think it will. There were a lot of gaps in data coverage, but they were in mostly dark areas of the image that I kind of lightly smoothed out the edges to make them unobtrusive.

This image is possible thanks to the following HST Proposals:

The third panel zooms out. There are dogs with little wings everywhere. Sarah says, “Where’s ANY of the cats?”
The fourth panel shows a circle of cats holding hands and dancing gleefully surrounded by flames in hell.
