no, she’s the wolf from a 4th or 5th century mosaic depicting the founding of Rome
The she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus, depicted in mosaic form as a maniacal black dog with sharp teeth and white eyes.
My dog, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the maniacal mosaic wolf.

Not to mention that he's an economist! And both of his examples are about economic theories. I get that we're all totally activated on everything, but it's not like he's saying "maybe homophobes are right".

We have *six days* left until the Academy of Natural Sciences, North America's oldest Natural History museum, is scheduled to close it's doors. Here are *six reasons* why we cannot - and will not- let that happen.

The letters Cicero writes during the fall of the Republic are always so fascinating to me - there's all this political crisis and death, but also there's like, I have a cold. I have a recommendation for a tutor for your son. Things move so much more slowly at the time. Life continues.

True, but I think the differences between them are probably less than as are advertised. The 24-hour ones let more oxygen through, but they're not like magically antibacterial

People do wear 24-hour contacts! It's a thing

Lauren K @violetconflict.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
That's wild! My optometrist mostly knew what I was doing and didn't give me any dire warnings

I might have preferred to have a supernaturally good mental health rather than eye health, but I guess I'll take what I can get!

Lauren K @violetconflict.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
You would think! But I did it for like 10-15 years, and the very first time my optometrist said I should wear my contacts less, I started looking at LASIK. I did eventually switch to weeklies designed to be worn 24h, I think?

Lauren K @violetconflict.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Ooof I got LASIK right before the pandemic, but before that when I used dailies, I slept with them in and wore each until I felt any discomfort - usually a month or two. Sounds nuts now that I say it!

I have successfully managed to avoid learning much about his politics and I'm sure there are things he has said I disagree with, but MAN is Hasan Piker cornering the market on "normal, reasonable person with a sense of reality" here.

"adding that no one was suggesting something went wrong " Uhhhhhh I would say that even reading the title of the article makes it clear that something sure did go wrong

That makes sense! And yet, there's nothing really for it but to cite Cleves a lot (which it sounds like Walden did) - no topic can be the province of only one historian or writer. Not how history works!

I would understand the hurt, but we don't always HAVE ownership over the stories we FEEL ownership over.

Lauren K @violetconflict.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Really interesting! I have read neither book and don't know what scholarship existed on the topic before Cleves's book, but I wonder if the very fact that the relationship happened and is worth a full-length book of piecing it together is what she feels ownership of.

Oof, my brother was like that! I think at one point he had to go stay in his sleepaway camp's infirmary because it got her l bad enough that he was having a systemic reaction. Pretty sure it got better when he got older though!

Also to be clear I did not have to explain this to anybody outside of academia. Everybody else assumes that I, like so many other people, was born here and grew up here and plan to stay here and my mom lives two blocks away (for better or for worse)

It's baffling. I moved back home and ended up with an academic job anyway, miraculously, but now have unfortunately lost that job and I keep having to explain to people that know, I will not be looking for another academic job where I would have to move!

Lauren K @violetconflict.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I'm not sure it's a class thing. I think it's an academia and also certain regions thing? Like there's some places where people just hated living growing up, and academia expects nothing else in your life to be important. But where I live almost everyone left for a bit and came back.

I use it to talk about the fabricated citation problem as well as the entire concept of making recommendations (and arguments in papers) based on evidence, rather than going backwards to add evidence to preconceived ideas.

This isn't a link but a 'case study' I discuss - the HHS report under RFK Jr on autism that was found to have LLM-fabricated citations, and then they went back and fixed them to real ones.

Who fucked up the calendar so October is the tenth month, not the eighth month, and WHY. (It was not Caesar or Augustus!!! That is not what happened! If anyone replies with that I am going to lose my mind.)

I hear you, but also the ancient Greeks would be FROTHING mad to imagine Alexander the Great as an example of Greekness! (Imho it's all very messy and pointless to try to worry about all that in modern movies)

My thoughts on Nolan's The Odyssey - it showed respect for the source material, which is what I'm basically looking for. I was a bit baffled by one of the main themes and of course they had to change stuff about Odysseus to make him not as much of a HUGE JERK. It was a version of the story for today
