There was a clang and everyone looked towards the source. The hatch on one of the maintenance tubes had popped open, and Kami was crawling out of it. “There we go, Roro, that little bug should be fixed now. Well, not so little, I guess – you would not believe the size of the thing I had to shoo out of the conduits.” She looked up, grinning behind her mask. “Oh, hey, you two!”

“Get out of my lab in that dirty jumpsuit!” Rowan screeched as she got to her feet. “You’re going to get particles and filth on everything!”

“‘Thank you, Kami, you’re the best, Kami, I owe you my life and a double-double animal style with animal fries, Kami’,” the roboticist said sarcastically, sauntering towards the door. “‘You’re the best of all time, Kami, I couldn’t do any of this without your beautiful face and incredible expertise, Kami’.”

“Just get back in here once you put on a jumpsuit that isn’t covered in conduit oil and filth,” Rowan said.

“Callahan, stay,” Alec said, following Kami.

“Stay? ‘Stay’. Like I’m a dog, or something,” Kitty grumbled, but remained behind, still curiously examining the hologram of their brain activity. She was probably going to talk the faun’s ear off with questions. Good.

The both of them went through the airlock, and when they reached the antechamber, Kami pulled the heating charm off, followed by her hood. “Gah. My hair’s always a mess in these things. Gets into my mouth.” She pushed her goggles up. “Hello, gorgeous.”

“You look good in anything, even one of these stupid bunny suits,” Alec said. “Why were you crawling around in there?”

“Well, Rowan can’t do it with their legs how they are – not like they’d ever admit it.”

“You have joint problems,” Alec said.

“I took pain medication and had a cushioning charm to reduce the impact on my knees, honey, I’m fine. I just shouldn’t be doing that every day, that’s all. Besides, I like crawling through duct work. Makes me feel like I’m on a starship.”

I want to do this until I can’t do it anymore, was what she didn’t have to say. I want to do this until my body won’t let me. Alec knew what she meant all too well. He knew that he had so much he wanted to do until his body finally gave out from the damn curse eating him alive. He certainly wouldn’t begrudge her a little bit of crawl time.

“You know yourself best,” he said, and she smiled.

“I’d give you a hug, but I think Rowan would have a fit,” she said, gesturing to her bunny suit. There was oil smeared on it, and the knees were scuffed up. The nitrile gloves had some grime on them, which only made sense given that she’d been doing repairs.

“I think Rowan would have a fit either way,” said Alec, “but point taken. They showed us the brain mapping from the data they were able to compile.”

“Oh? They finished that? I was crawling around in there for hours.”

“Mm. It’s…interesting.”

“Alec,” Kami said, removing her nitrile gloves before sitting down and unbuckling the clean room boots. “You’re a terrible liar.”

“I’m actually a fantastic liar,” he said. “It’s part of my job.”

“Fine – then you’re a terrible liar when it comes to me. I know it was more than ‘interesting’, don’t tell me something so neutral. Did they figure out what’s wrong?”

yeah I didn't get into this initially because I think it's something people often misunderstand but library (and school) sales are actually a super important chunk of sales, especially for YA/kidlit (because that's what gets books into the hands of their target audience--kids don't have money)

Rowan nodded stiffly. “Tiburon.”

“No, not ‘Tiburon’,” Kami said slyly. “What was your cute little nickname for him earlier? ‘Meathead Senior’?”

Rowan blanched, and Baz laughed, thumping his cane on the floor. “I’ve been called far worse, Fizzbin, but thank you for the nickname all the same.”

“So, Baz, I heard tell that you sing,” said Kami. “Care to serenade us after all this is through? The acoustics in this place are second-to-none.”

“Perhaps, but you may have to get me a little tipsy first,” he said.

“Okay, bet,” said Kitty. “Alec, use my allowance to buy Uncle Baz some alcohol.”

“You don’t get an allowance,” Alec said wearily.

“What? Why not? I perform labor! I should be able to be paid for my tasks!”

Alec looked at Kami. “You never should have introduced her to Marx.”

one of our books has an entire subplot where folks are trying to find a zip drive so they can read a zip disk they found, and hilariously I wrote it during the 7 months where netbooks were a thing before iPads killed them, so they're all making fun of zip drives while using their netbooks. 🤣

“I don’t know how else to be.”

“Ha.” Rowan turned back to him. “My data’s still compiling. I won’t be able to tell you anything useful yet. Except that you need to keep using your wand.”

“Right hand?”

“Please. To keep the magic flowing strongly on that side of your body.”

Alec sighed and looked at his hands. “Not likely I’m going to be shooting lightning bolts from my fingertips anytime soon, huh?”

“Not unless you want the cure to be worse than the disease,” Rowan said. “I can make something for you that’ll do that, but you’d be able to do it a grand total of once before, I assume, the curse marks spread and engulf your entire body.”

“Yeah, I’m good, thanks.”

“Your choice. Now. You said you don’t like the taste of your potion?”

“Gasoline and grapefruit, Rowan. It’s not my preferred palate.”

“I think I’ll need to rework it based on what I’m gathering from this rudimentary data. I should have something for you next week. You’ll be fine to continue taking your current medication until it runs out.”

“No chance of a little shot of mint or something in the meantime?”

“I’m afraid that I can’t wrap your medicine in cheese like I’d have to do for a dog, Alec, until the new potion is complete I can’t in good conscience let you potentially make what you have left into a dud.”

“I thought you were a mad scientist.”

Rowan scoffed. “I’m no mad scientist. I’m perfectly sane.”

“Mm, and that’s what worries me.”

Rowan swatted him on the back of the head. “If you’re quite done being fresh? We can head back out to the front now. I believe we’ve someone to see.”
