Major flash flooding in Spain yesterday. In Madrigueras (Albacete), 142 mm fell in just 2.5 hours, killing one woman, while many others had to be rescued. These "DANA" events are not uncommon, but record warm Mediterranean water now provides further 'fuel' to them. www.eltiempo.es/noticias/mad...

A minimum of 18.8ºC at the University of Reading Atmospheric Observatory this morning is well above the previous record (+16.7ºC) for the 30th of September. It is the second-warmest September night on record. The record from 1949 of 20.3ºC on the 5th of September still stands.
Scatter plot of every September daily minimum temperature at Reading since 1908, plotted by day of the month and coloured from blue (below the 1991–2020 average) to red (above it). Most minima fall between 4°C and 16°C, and a dashed line shows the average easing from about 11°C at the start of the month to about 10°C by the 30th. A red star marks 30 September 2026 at 18.8°C, the second-highest September minimum on record, behind 20.3°C on 5 September 1949, and 2.1°C above the previous 30 September record of 16.7°C from 1923.

Massive flash floods hit Bangkok during 24–27 September 2026. The visuals show 30-min rainfall and how totals accumulated. Recorded local totals were higher: the ~8 km CMORPH grid smooths extremes, so this is best for showing spatial patterns, not exact local values. NOAA CPC data was used. #climate

This isn't getting enough attention. The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at its lowest level since 1983. Why? Trump and the GOP have been selling it off to try to keep oil prices low and artificially hide the real impact of the Iran War.

Excellent illustration of how climate change intensified the storm’s rainfall across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, increasing rainfall totals by around 20%. Hea näide @edhawkins.org sellest, kuidas kliimamuutus võimendas Eesti, Läti ja Leedu tormi sademeid, suurendades sajuhulka ligikaudu 20%.

With the looming El Nino, what does this mean for UK weather? Likely wet? The major El Nino events of the last 50 years have all been coincident with a wet UK in late autumn into winter. The wetter winter part did not occur during the 1877-78 El Nino, which we think was the largest event on record.

This is.. bad. Recent ECM forecasts are suggesting a “very extreme” wildfire risk for next week as heatwaves return. Extremely dry vegetation will allow any fires that do get started to spread extremely rapidly. This is about as high-end extreme as it gets for the UK.
