Finished Astro Boy 2003, great show. Fun episodic adventures painting a world full of wonders, a darling sense of optimism about the future, and then things escalate and it becomes all about the quiet dread of living in a society that's increasingly polarized and hostile to minorities

first episode of #AveMujica is a grim reminder that while Sakiko commands complete loyalty from people who fall under the sway of her magic charisma, the people who are immune to it literally don't give a shit about her feelings or desires

There are so many to choose from but this has always been my favorite Steinlen cat. 1909. emuseum.mfah.org/objects/4936...

Color lithograph print of a brown classic tabby lying on a wooden railing, one back leg dangling down. The coat is rich and beautiful, shades of black and brown creating tiger strips on the legs and making a classic tabby swirl on the abdomen. It has intense yellow eyes. Behind it is a wall of foliage, every done is warm, golden tones.

Discworld QOTD, from Hogfather

All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point—"

MY POINT EXACTLY.

The author of Matazoro, one of my favourite manga 'til it got axed, has a new work out, "Ore no Kasumitaina Jinsei wa Zenbu Tanuki no Sei" ("Tanuki are completely to blame for my garbage-ass life")

Manga cover image of an uncomfortable-looking beanstalk of a man and a jacketed fluffball girl with tanuki ears in a modern city. Superimposed is the title "Ore no Kasumitaina Jinsei wa Zenbu Tanuki no Sei"
