i'm 220 pages in roughly, my take aways so far: 1. LAPD didn't get enough flack for their mistakes which were bonkers 2. LAFD behaved worse than I think was known this entire time. It's insane that they regularly skipped state paid training 3. Pasadena has disgraced itself by not participating

I'm slowly working through the big independent report about the Palisades and Eaton Fires that came out recently. Neither tiny community run systems or gargantuan big city ones were perfect, but also i still think the fire was just too fast for anything to respond fast enough

I keep saying positive stuff about Fortune's Weave, it's not a flawless game but it's so large and impressive that it's faults are really minor. It's the kind of game Nintendo needs to sell Switch 2s, and while i'm not done with it yet it might be the best Fire Emblem? It's the most Fire Emblem

I don't think the 360 launched with wireless internet at all. Our first router was probably still new when the Wii came out. We were using dialup probably like two years before the Wii came out. All this technology was extremely new at the time. So of course people used the wii browser

At the time the Wii came out and the internet features became enabled, this was only the third device (#2 was my DS) in our house that connected to the internet. I still knew people who didn't own a computer at all and this was their first device that could connect to the internet.

I got through the four routes in Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, i'm like 150ish hours in, and probably have another 20 to go. This is probably the longest game i've ever played

i'm pretty sure it replaced "computational power" or may have always been like engineering shorthand for it. It probably in effect replaced talking about transistors when they became too numerous to comprehend or hertz when we reached a point where they stopped doubling every year.

Fire Emblem isn't known for it's great horses, they rarely have names. Fortune's Weave fixed that and have us the greatest horse ever in Bucephalus

by the time it is ready to go west their expectations are probably "this is going to at least break even" but also it's hard to argue you'd do things differently from their perspective. if the anime did succeed then when you sell the rights to pikachu trapper keepers or whatever it's more free money

If you're a fan of Three Houses and were waiting for a game to sell you on a Switch 2, Fortune's Weave is really it. It's not a perfect game but it gives you so much to do you can go without another switch 2 for a long time. I'm 70-80 hours in and have only done two paths and not the second half

Almost done with Expedition 33, it's definitely among the classics of the genre. It's difficult to imagine an end of the decade list without it. The level of effort and artistry it has we just don't get a lot of anymore.

yeah, a lot of podcasts, that are primarily informative rather than talk, never seem to source anything they are not an expert in. Being transported from radio I think they're insulated from reckonings over sources that have hit other new digital media. A good biography goes unmentioned when quoted.

I like that the series takes big swings in its art direction. It's neat that from Wind Waker to Twilight Princess on the same console they did two extremely different art styles because those suited the game they were making better. They weren't worried about the series losing visual identity.

On top of that if you get fought to a stalemate at any point the war is just over. Bad things happen if you try to dig yourself out even if you have more than enough resources to do that. Such as pulling in more civs into the war.

The combat/tech side of things feels like they wanted a more grounded harder to cheese system like what paradox does but there is little realistic about it. mid-way through an era you have to upgrade things but then when the era ends it all gets upgraded anyway.

The new stuff they added is just kind of sucky. Leader selection is now even more complicated minutia that doesn't matter. The new era system is an unfun and worse version of past era systems. Makes earning tech and civics feel like a waste of time.

You have a very narrow amount of control over what your "cities" are doing (which are not at all like cities from past games) and you just have to trust the system is doing what it says efficiently. It feels like they took control away from the player as much as possible.

I gave civ 7 a chance since it is free this week. I don't see this game reaching a state where I would want to buy and play it. It's like a worse Civ 6 filled with game design choices that feel like I'm playing a mobile game by a AAA dev.
