"Kimi's scaffold is excellent — arguably better-specified than Opus's" -- Opus 5 testing Opus 5 and Kimi K3 on the same task. (it *has* also identified deficiencies, but this is Opus systematically working through a workflow that is currently Opus only and identifying which parts it can shell […]

Opus 5 on Kimi K3 after doing a comparative test of its own work and Kimi's executed alongside each other, both in Claude Code, with the same prompt: "Kimi matched Opus on the stage that costs the most." "Kimi's D6 diagnosis is arguably better than Opus's" I've had poor luck with K3 on things […]

So 1 vote for "no, Kimi K3 is not beating Opus or Sonnet". After a night and a day of churning, K3 has managed to get almost exactly nowhere on optimising my compiler, on changes Opus at least has no problems with. But more than having problems with specific changes, I've had to babysit it from […]

I didn't mean to imply it was the runtime, but it was a really weird bug in the first place, as even if you lose track there'd be no reason to do more than move to top and reprint the last terminal height worth of lines. It was a great test case for my terminal emulator, though...

Kimi CLI will actually write a /goal for you to drive a loop. Testing it now to have Kimi drive a brutal optimization loop to speed up the compiler, and it wrote a very nice, structured goal plan... We'll see how quickly I hit my weekly quota for my (highest level) Kimi subscription too (then […]

@junkman Even if we 10x'd data centres, the heat output would be a rounding-error compared to climate change. I get concerns about data centres driving or maintaining demands for non-renewables, but in the UK at least the growth in DC demand is not anywhere near outstripping renewables growth […]

Strangely Kimi-CLI appears to have repeated the old Claude Code "re-print everything from the beginning of time" bug. It's now fixed in Claude Code. But Kimi-CLI is also Python vs. a Node JS (Claude Code), so it's not like they've directly copied it either (and Kimi CLI is pretty different).

Claude has done the heavy lifting, of generation-aware type-inference to identify safe call-sites to devirtualize, and all of those call-sites are then inherently also candidates for inlining. "In theory" this should be relatively easy - it's just down to safely splicing the inline-able AST […]

As for why it adds complexity, consider that each define method effectively changes the type of any object belonging to that class. To devirtualize and inline we need to either know that doesn't happen, know it doesn't matter (different method), or guard against it. For now - and the reason […]

Basic de-virtualization (turning fully dynamic method calls into static calls when we know the class) now works. It "only" saves about 2.4% on the self-compilation so far, but the type inference it requires allows for a lot more (e.g. inlining) One of the complexities is that it does *not* […]

First type-inference attempt for my #ruby compiler is underway. It's likely to be brittle for a while, but it will enable very significant optimizations (e.g. de-virtualization of any method calls where it can be proven that the method does not get redefined, and the receiver type is known […]

@junkman Just to add that Spinel is far more likely to be production ready anytime soon. This is very much a side project for me, and has been dormant for years at a time. I'm more interested in the academic side of figuring out how to create a fairly minimal compiler. The choices made for […]

@junkman I'm aware of it. It's great, but it's a very different approach given it's largely C, and takes a lot of shortcuts that limits it to accept less Ruby or deviate from MRI. Mine is pure Ruby other than the GC (for now; that will also be pure Ruby soon) and will stay that way, and […]

Two people in the background, one adding a sign to the large filing cabinet that takes up the whole of the space behind the individual with the blue shirt.

One person to the left saying "Shouldn't we just be looking for sex crimes and terrorism?" to which the computer-using-individual replies "That was during the previous term of office"

The filing cabinets have titles such as "terrorism, sex crime, researchers, the unemployed, drug addicts..."

For simplicity, years ago, I made my Ruby compiler materialise a Proc for every block call - it's semantically valid and it saved me implementing block capture. But it has massive overheads anywhere where you only ever yield and don't need an object. How much overhead? Turns out that after […]
