I don't post much, but I'm not a bot or a plant--I'm here to follow the folks I used to follow and learn from on the other place. English professor; university administrator; lucky blue-state dweller. Trying to be a better fascist-opposer.

This has been my most deeply held belief since I was very small, and nothing has ever or will ever change my mind; indeed every botched execution, every wrongly convicted person exonerated after death or years on death row, every single thing I’ve ever read or seen has only convinced me more

We are a cruel, barbaric country, and the taking of a life is evil, and the taking of a life by the state is a monstrous evil, and as long as we continue to do it we will continue to be a cruel, barbaric country

There's always a relevant Auden poem; this penultimate stanza from "The Shield of Achilles" has been in my head for the last week: A ragged urchin, aimless and alone, Loitered about that vacancy; a bird Flew up to safety from his well-aimed stone:

It's real! Too many people to thank, but I'm feeling so very grateful for the years of conversation, learning, and generosity that made this book possible. More about the book below --
Left hand holds a white hardcover book. The top half features an American flag with ASL alphabet replacing stars. Bottom half reads “before disability. A history of American citizenship. Sari Altschuler” in blue, red, and off-white text.

Why is #EduSky almost entirely organizations posting? It's cool that I can see posts in Welsh (from "Qualifications Wales"), but where are the actual people?

It stuns me how many ppl on this site scorn anyone who dares to be over 50 in public. Would you prefer that "grannies"—about whose histories you know, btw, nothing—NOT show up at rallies? Newsflash: Old people are just PEOPLE who were lucky enough to get OLD. We'd like you to have that option too.

I think a lot about Eve Sedgwick's observation about weaponized ignorance in politics: "If M. Mitterand knows English but Mr. Reagan lacks--as he did lack--French, it is the urbane M. Mitterand who must negotiate in an acquired tongue, the ignorant Mr. Reagan who may dilate in his native one."

I wrote this song, "I Will Join You When I Can," a few years back, and I share it here in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It began life as I thought about what Dr. King said to the audience in Memphis the night before he died, "I may not get there with you..."
