Part of the roof of the Old Town Hall in Sheffield has collapsed. It was on our first Top Ten Endangered Buildings list in 2007. Empty since 1995. @vicsoc-syorks.bsky.social & Friends of the Old Town Hall have been campaigning since 2007 for this key civic building. 📷📽️: CAV Aerial for Vic Soc🧵

Regrettably a Sheffield historic landmark has made the Victorian Society Top Ten Endangered Buildings list for 2026. St Michael's Cemetery Chapel in the City Rd Cemetery is one step away from falling down and the story is found here bit.ly/42ocYgR Our group will again pressure SCC for urgent action

🎓Following our final talk in April we move to our Summer Walks programme. Our first is a guided walk around University of Sheffield. ☹️ Sorry to report we have had to CANCEL our planned visit to Loxley Cemetery tomorrow, 19th July. The forecast thunderstorms and potentially treacherous ground when muddy means we must put safety first. We will be rearranging the walk for summer 2026, keep an eye out for more details.

The #TopTen25 is out including our very own Edgerton Cemetery Chapel in #Huddersfield. Designed by James Pritchett and built in 1855 the Grade II listed chapel is now in a ruinous state suffering from years of decay and damage. victoriansociety.org.uk/endangered-b...

The 3rd and final heritage building lost during 2024 was derelict and neglected for 6 years before it was deemed dangerous to the public and demolished with no attempt to save any of the significant historic fabric. See the story here. bit.ly/41xkFBN Tomorrow good news for the weekend?

The 2nd of our significant heritage buildings lost in 2024 is the Old Coroner's Court, Nursery Street, Sheffield. A irreplacable example of a combined Coroner's Court and Mortuary from before the first world war, now lost to another modern box with little merit. See the story here. bit.ly/3ZQN44I

The chapel site in 2013 and how it looks today.
The chapel site was badly overgrown. We started clearing it in 2013. The chapel was demolished in the 1950s. The mound on which it stood has become a performance space and is where we hold our Remembrance Service.The neatly cut grass on the chapel site with poppy wreaths laid at the base of the obelisk memorial.The overgrown chapel site in 2013.How the chapel site looks now with neatly cut grass.
