Just got back. I probably saw 30 people, only me, one staff member, one other patient who just moved here from Idaho, chatty with the phlebotomy nurse, were masked. Which tbh, was higher than the last time I was at that clinic.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 4h

Same for me. It was always taking a chance to catch something, but my whole life, the nurse would bring the contagious person right into the room, not to expose the others. The thing I hear most often, is "I'm done with it." It meaning vaccines and illness. Well, the germs ain't done for you.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 4h

Agree. I got away quick so I don't know if they were masked. I hoped they were at the pharmacy to get paxlovid, or similar. I've got a blood draw today and I'm curious if everyone will be masked at the docs. They never are including sick doctors. The nurses are slightly better.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 4h

Right?! Shockingly, because I never hear admissions, I was walking by the pharmacy at Walmart yesterday, and four people in line were chatting how they all currently had covid, they admitted it, so publicly. They did not know each other.

Good choice. We were told when visiting FL that *any* body of water could have them. Literally any.

Today's poem from the daily @parisreview.bsky.social by Frank O’Hara Fou-rire It really is amusing that for all the centuries of mankind the problem has been how to kill enough people and now it is how not to kill them all From issue no. 69 (Spring 1977)

Wales, Sweden, Aegean Islands, France, and Sardinia are gone. Those were the ones I was actually interested in. I know the Scottish, Irish, and French background.

Not sure what Ancestry's doing, but removing the old countries to clump it all together into the recent isn't why most people are on Ancestry. France is entirely gone and everything is clumped into Quebec. All I see is Scotland and Ireland. It doesn't list any other European countries for me. 🫨

Another effect of Anne Carson being awarded a Nobel Prize, is that in my search for her book I know I bought recently, and can't find, is that I need more bookcases. The poets are out of alphabetical order. 🤩

From FB memories: In 1566, my 13x great grandfather, John Rose of Bridewell, was ordered to desist from holding puppet shows. I love this so much. So I've got luthiers on both sides of my tree as my grandfather for a time made violins also. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ro...

These are the best cc cookies by far. Better than the tolls. If you don't like oatmeal, no worries, you can't taste it. Just a nuttier flavour.

I've decided that the reason hummingbirds fly south, is because the box elder bugs arrive. At least 20 on the deck in the last hour, will be in the house forthwith.

They need a required comprehensive best practices document, that tallies all the good stuff and the stuff that needs to be fixed/changed for future cons. If for no other reason than recording the total history of the event. Memory and goodwill can't be relied on esp if it puts people at risk.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

They absolutely should be. It's the Hilton. I'm so sorry you and other attendees were impacted. As a former events person, though much smaller events, it makes me sad that not all attendees were considered. And worse even, dismissed.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Why would venues even allow this? Anything built on their premises they're responsible/liable for. You'd think they'd have overarching rules beyond the conferences' choices. . How could they even included "Walking participants only" as the reason?? Horrifying. Thank you for writing and sharing this

Just the other day I downloaded Adobe for one form only. The second it's complete, it's gone. I can't believe how much it rewrites, bloatware. It even downloaded McAfee, which I don't want either. Already deleted that.

Marianne Boruch is reading for the Jackson Poetry Prize right now. She noted that the poem she was about to read, she didn't remember. Same, Marianne, same. (I google my own old poems to make sure it wasn't a c/p situation. It never has been, and I don't but I worry.) She's amazing btw.

All of this. I'll add that not everyone knows public libraries are free, so make sure you talk about that esp if you're a teacher. Some parents don't know.

Vicky MacDonald Harris @vickymharris.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

This is so important. Some people don't know libraries exist, or that it's free. It's important for schools to talk about public libraries, not just the school library.
