The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

You can spot AI autodialers because they sound so chirpy. Every human making a phone call in 2026 sounds exhausted.

Sentience does not reliably protect humans from being exploited or killed, and it does not prevent animals from being eaten or killed for sport. Just a reminder as we debate AI sentience.

We were remembering an interesting space documentary we watched a while back and decided to look it up to watch with kiddo and it turns out Disney+ purged it and you just can't watch it anymore, the end.

I went to see the new Spider Man on opening night, and I like Spider Man a lot, but there is no way that this one is "the best one yet" or the present 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. I like the performers in their roles and all, but both of the Spiderverse films are a lot stronger.

I know a lot of the reasons it happens. A lot of the time it is not really the "fault" of any one person, or it is "the hiring manager has a boss too," basically. But I am aware that it kind of smacks of trying to weasel out of accountability to get into those stories, which is not my goal
010
Vicky Harp @vickyharp.com · 25/07/2026
I know how it happens. The interviewer is part of a panel and communication is supposed to route through a recruiter who has too much on their plate. Exec holds get placed, reqs get transferred, hiring gets frozen. It's an intricate and brittle process. I don't present that as an excuse though.

Vicky Harp @vickyharp.com · 25/07/2026
It's endemic. I was ghosted by Microsoft a couple times before I was hired. When I flew in to interview in 2018 I had to sit in an empty room for an hour because of scheduling snafus. I have been ghosted a few times since I left. And it turns out that I was ghosting people while I was there.

Vicky Harp @vickyharp.com · 25/07/2026
I did a lot of interviewing when I was at Microsoft, sometimes 5-10 ppl a week. I didn't find out until much later that some candidates were ghosted by the process. It shakes me to the core to know I was part of this and I apologize unreservedly to anyone who experienced it. Those are not my values.

Oh fuck yes. This is a really shitty practice. Anyone who gets as far as a screening interview deserves a response for sure. I’d extend that to anyone who applies but that’s more debatable.

If you work in data and do not know YugabyteDB: I get it, I was in the same spot 6 months ago. It's neat though, genuinely. For my relational friends, you will find it more intuitive than you'd expect. It's a PostgreSQL endpoint over a distributed back end that uses RocksDB. It even runs Northwind.

In an hour I will be doing my first livestream presentation since I joined YugabyteDB. It sure would be fun to see some familiar sqlfamily faces, just saying. :) You will learn something even if you are not yet in the distributed SQL world! www.linkedin.com/posts/vickyh...

I think it depends on my expected quality level for the ice cream. Chocolate on the low tier, pistachio mid. Vanilla emerges at the upper tier, then we kind of get into the S tier where I expect them to tell me their specialty.

One of my favorite work from home things is when I go to close my office door and the dog is right outside, I ask him if he wants to join the upcoming meeting or not. It amuses me to no end. "Hey buddy, do you want to join the geospatial sync?"

I unironically love how much faith Claude has in me
Something like (3-5) ∩ (2,4,6) ∩ (<10) → {3,4,5} ∩ {2,4,6} → {3,4} ∪ {5} wait, actually {4} plus... you'd work it out. The point is you get a canonical form.

The first time I ever saw a hit swappable RAID array was in an MCI office tower in Houston. I later heard some of the equipment from that office was taken home by employees after they didn't get paid during one of the accounting scandals.

I was trying to tell my kid about "10-10" numbers being advertised on television and it was truly hopeless. Explaining mass market interexchange carriers to someone who has no notion of landlines, much less long distance carriers.
