“I always say that ICE aren’t actually fearful of their safety,” he said. “What they’re fearful of is not being invited to baseball games or not being invited to the pub with their friends. Community exclusion – that’s what they’re fearful of.”

Hammer, meet nail. Thought the distraction and base instincts of football fandom saved us from uglier politics. Turns out political fandom dumbs down policy debate and activates those base instincts in dangerous ways. Here’s hoping that our higher selves will prevail. 🤞🏽 www.wired.com/story/expire...

Politics Is Fandom; Fascism Is Fanfic

From Zohran Mamdani’s campaign to the US government’s “Halo” memes, fandom has become the defining language of US politics.

Sometimes you read to escape; sometimes you read to remember; and sometimes you read to learn. Time’s Undoing offers all three. Thought it might be a “heavy read,” but it was perfect for this time. A reminder of what America has always been, and a vision of hope in steady resistance. TY, @cheaddc

We’ve bombed Iran. And dismantled our joint terrorism task force. And sent a third of the FBI to help ICE. And gutted the National Security Council. And a drunk guy is in charge at the pentagon. And our intelligence allies probably won’t share intel with us. Because people couldn’t vote for a woman.

Things are bleak, but I still find music that moves me to tears and writing that feeds my mind and electrifies my soul and art that amazes me. In the darkness I see a lot of brilliance. It’s inspiring. Whatever you do, keep making art.

Author Veronica Gutierrez holds up her second novel Buried Seeds, A Yolanda Avila Mystery. In the background is a painting by Kobra entitled The Refugees’ Scream, a take on Edvard Munch’s The Scream, with a mother carrying her child as she races over the bridge ahead of a uniformed officer leading a reluctant police dog. The relevance of the painting will not be lost on readers.

She had just started teaching there in September. So many people we know lost homes. I fervently hope that they recover from having their lives turned upside down. The landscape of our lives may be changed forever, but I believe our resilience will see our community through this.

I also don’t know how everyone in our huge family avoided a direct hit from this tragedy, but I feel so lucky for us. We all know so many people directly affected. We are hosting a dear friend who evacuated from Pasadena, but whose home and neighbors are fine. Our niece’s school burned in Altadena.

A heartfelt thanks to friends and family who have checked in on us. Other than bad air quality, we are okay. But, damn! This has to be the worst disaster L.A. has ever experienced. I don’t know how some of these communities, like poor Altadena, recover.
