Het stuk over Mary Todd, de vrouw van Abraham Lincoln, is absurd en hilarisch, maar expres volledig losgezongen van historische feiten en context. Toch een aanrader voor allen die zin hebben in een volstrekt gestoord toneelstuk!

Daarin speel je Arthur Morgan, een outlaw en ganglid in de laatste jaren van het Wilde Westen. Arthur wordt keer op keer meegezogen in belangrijke hoofdstukken in de geschiedenis van de VS, waaronder de Suffragette beweging, dwangarbeid en de opmars van grote industriëlen in de American Frontier.

Donderdag: Ik wil even nog iets over mijn werkplek vertellen. Je kunt in Wageningen niet geschiedenis studeren. Toch werken er historici. We geven veel interdisciplinair onderwijs, vaak samen met collega’s uit andere vakgroepen, en voegen dus historische diepte toe aan hedendaagse kwesties.

Aan een universiteit die gespecialiseerd is in life sciences, dragen we als historici bij met een grondig historisch begrip van de mechanismen achter kolonisatie. We hebben daarom de cursus Colonialism & Slavery in World History ontwikkeld. Die staat trouwens ook open voor studenten van andere unis!

... ik later in Nederland zou terechtkomen. Na 1 jaar onderwijs geven aan een uni in Bogotá kwam ik naar Leiden voor een RMA in migratiegeschiedenis. Toen ik klaar was, kreeg ik de kans om als AIO slavernij in de VS te onderzoeken. Dat deed ik door de lens van migratiestudies. The rest is history!

Dinsdag: Tv-documentaires zijn geweldig om een breed publiek te bereiken. Om tijdperken van vóór de uitvinding van fotografie en film te verbeelden maken documentairemakers vaak gebruik van reenactments. Ik vind het persoonlijk het sterkst als nagespeelde scenes dicht bij een primaire bron blijven.

Ik was de afgelopen jaren betrokken bij twee van dit soort documentaires. In 2020 sprak ik als expert in de Duitstalige herbewerking van *Ebony: The Last Years of the Atlantic Slave Trade*, van de Senegalese regisseur Moussa Touré.

De film citeert letterlijk uit het logboek v/d kapitein van een slavenschip & interviews met slaafgemaakte vrouwen & mannen–die tot leven worden gewekt door acteurs. Ook de originele bronnen zelf spelen een belangrijke rol in de visuele taal van de film. Deze docu gebruik ik ook in mijn onderwijs.

Illustratie in kleur, deels tekening, deels collage. Laat zien hoe tot slaaf gemaakte arbeiders op een suikerplantage oogsten. In de achtergrond werkdieren en individuele arbeiders.

Gevangene slaven worden in een rij door een landschap met palmen geleidt. In het beeld integreert is een originele lijst met Franse namen van mensen, hun leeftijden en prijzen.

Sturmer was een Duitse handelaar en piraat die als galeislaaf in Noord-Afrika terecht kwam. Trouwens zijn dit soort autobiografische verslagen van christelijke slaven uit de 16e eeuw nog een stuk ouder dan de veel bekendere narratives van voormalige slaafgemaakten uit de 18e en 19e-eeuwse Amerika’s.

In Nederland had je vanaf de jaren 80 *Van Nul tot Nu*, een reeks informatieve stripverhalen over de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Recenter verschenen strips zoals *Quako*, door Eric Heuvel & Ineke Mok, over het Nederlandse slavernijverleden in Suriname.

Daar doe ik met een Veni-beurs onderzoek naar illegale arbeid in Brazilië, Cuba en de VS in de 19e eeuw. Illegale migratie en illegaliteit wordt vaak gezien als een typisch eigentijds probleem, maar het heeft een verrassend lange geschiedenis.

Abstract lecture: In 1945, Germany lay in ruins, morally and materially. The German people stood condemned by history, responsible for a horrifying genocide and a war of extermination. But by 2015 Germany looked to many to be the moral voice of Europe, welcoming almost one million refugees. At the same time, it pursued a controversially rigid fiscal discipline and made energy deals with a dictator. Many people have asked how Germany descended into the darkness of the Nazis. This lecture asks another vital question: how, and how far, have the Germans since reinvented themselves? To answer this question, the lecture follows the ups and downs of complicity, conscience and compassion. Their mixed history helps explain the difficult present in which the country finds itself today.

Frank Trentmann is Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London and the University of Helsinki.
