vestibular migraine: "This poorly understood form of migraine is primarily characterized by dizziness, disequilibrium and vertigo — but no headache. Because there’s typically no head pain, doctors often mistakenly rule out migraine, making diagnosis elusive." www.nytimes.com/2026/07/06/w... (sub)

Deiters’ cells are a morphologically intriguing supporting cell type in the organ of Corti! Really excited to see this study on the largely overlooked role/s of supporting cells in the inner ear organs.

#OTD in 1932, Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland & landed in N. Ireland ~15h later--the first woman to fly solo & nonstop across the Atlantic. Nat'l Women in Aerospace Day (20 May) marks this anniversary & honors women in #aviation, aerospace engineering, #space exploration & more. #avgeek
A black-and-white photograh shows the legendary American aviator Amelia Earhart (1897–1937) standing before an aircraft. Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, is positioned centrally, gazing directly at the viewer with a gentle, confident smile and squinted eyes that suggest a bright, outdoor setting. Her signature short, wind-swept curls appear tousled, adding to the candid, adventurous mood of the shot. She is dressed in her iconic flying attire: a dark, heavy leather flight jacket worn over a collared, checkered blouse, with a silk scarf knotted neatly at her throat. Behind her, the metallic, riveted fuselage of an airplane—likely her Lockheed Vega—fills the background, its curved surface and visible rivet lines highlighting the industrial era of early flight. The composition is intimate and heroic, capturing Earhart not just as a pilot, but as a symbol of poise and determination. This image serves as a powerful historical record of a woman who broke gender barriers and redefined the possibilities of aviation before her disappearance during a circumnavigation attempt in 1937.

“When I make these requests, I feel perceived as difficult, or I have to explain that I’m hard of hearing. Because I don’t have my aids in, and I’m youngish, I feel like it’s seen as a strange request." www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/li... #keeplistening

Hearing loss is becoming more common. So why is there still stigma?
One in four Australians is expected to have hearing loss by 2050. Here’s how advocates – and engineers – are seeking to reduce the shame around this common condition.

Students from Barnstable High School joined us last week for the High School Discovery Program at the MBL. During their CRISPR genome editing course, they used SyGlass virtual reality headsets to explore and visualize confocal microscopy data.

Mechanosensory Hair Cells in a Mouse Cochlea
We seek to understand how hearing works at a molecular level; that is, how a sound wave is transduced into an electrical signal by hair cells of the inner ear. The cover image of the March 17 issue of...

Chapter 1 – Why do we feel dizzy when turning? This comes from how the inner ear’s rotation sensors (the semi-circular canals) work mechanically. The short videos below (and the next one) explain why. (And yes, that video is low-quality, but it's actually me on the chair 😅)

Why hearing in noisy places gets harder with age, even with “normal” hearing This study links hidden damage in the ear's neural wiring to speech-in-noise difficulties and increased listening effort in middle-aged adults. buff.ly/m9fS8Nv
