So curious how the Christian Nationalists do when their entire platform is removing rainbow sidewalks.

Can’t say you’ve researched Vancouver nominees until you know WAY more than you want about Fenton Travers!

Our week for October Surprise showing 13 Ghosts with clarified pina coladas ( a split gummy bear on the glass!) Did a few ghost snacks, like strawberry Tajin jalapeño poppers (angry princess), pigs in a blanket (Torso), and oatmeal cookies shaped like juggernaut from 90s X-men (Juggernaut)
70s style rocks class with a vivisected gummy bear attached to the rim of the glass, and a pale clear drink with ice cubes and lime slice. Jalapeño half with pale red cream cheese topped with panko and charred on the edges.A blobby oatmeal cooker with the faintest hints of a face.

I love that every O’Bannon script is a different subgenre of horror, D&B hits better than anything else on the procedural thriller/descent into madness level except maybe Jacob’s Ladder.

Thinking I’d slip back into work for two days before a long weekend was a mistake tbh. Haven’t been on a Skytrain or had to go to the bathroom in public, yet.

Now that we’re back I can unwrap my favorite Japan merch!
A Japanese pressing of the original Godzilla movie soundtrack in mono, green and beige Onitsuka Tiger shoes, hand made leather card holder with marbled blue stripe, ceramic sake set with a square bottle that looks like a white lava flow descending from the top, a museum book of Saeki work, and a book called How Is Life? about designing and urban planning focused on the Earth

Respectfully submitting my application to the Canadian Pacific Northwest Regional Competitive Packers Association for consideration in the Winter 2026 Packathon Tournament sponsored by Visa for the 25-45 age bracket in Fruitvale, British Columbia on December 14th. #goingtoregionals
An extremely full open suitcase with gifts from Japan, neatly fitting into one another. The exposed layer is three rolls of knitting yarn, a bubble-wrapped box, Family Mart socks, a bag from the hell hole Don Quijote, a Nintendo gatcha ball, a politely wrapped box, a pair of wrapped size 13 shoes, and a black shirt safely wrapping some fucking thing.

At a fancy Tokyo knife store- Him: oh man, that one looks amazing, you see it? Her: yeah. Him: but I like that one too. Her: OK. Him: should I get that one? Her: it’s not like you’re going to use it. He followed her out the door not buying anything.

Exploring 21_21.
The exterior of gallery 3 of 21_21 Design Museum. An angular roof bearing down on clean glass walls. An acute angle brutalist concrete corridor with the left side being lit by ground, guiding lights and the right substantially darker. An angled window on the right with several ridged slats is cleanly reflect in the windows of a staircase guard rail leading partially up.A small blue flower creeps out of smoothed concrete wall in front of wooden scaffolding, its reflection caught in the glass beneath a hand rail.

Exploring Tokyo.
Two edges of Senso-Jo against a cloud spotted sky.A third-full sake glass in front of two tea cups with a mostly full sake glass and mostly empty sake bottle in the background.Oranges, well-lit leaves float above a raising skyline and black night sky, all around a tower with a well lit Japanese character. An intersection in Shibuya, with tower buildings rising above streets, the most prominent marked Modi with greenery crawling up.

I fucking love Dead and Buried and I consistently plan ambushing friends with it, but I had multiple run ins with this movie in Japan and didn’t buy. Something about the art didn’t gel with me!
Full Japanese poster for Dead and Buried, with the body cast, a shattered car window, the protagonist looking down at his hands, his wife, and the population from the town.

Chatting with locals and business owners when able, I have odd feelings about celebrating some places we went, but holy shit Vintage Jinbocho was a Mecca for film nerds.
A dimly lit cover, mostly the siloutte of the car from Christine with clean Japanese characters as a title.A composited, perspective shot of overhead Los Angeles for Blade Running, all in Japanese.A hanging poster for The Shining with Japanese characters, Jack peaking through the door and Wendy terrified of the axe coming through the bathroom door.Dead and Buried cover with the town crowd walking towards the camera and a small from the lead character staring at his hands.

I don’t know what to do with this Lifeforce release book just yet, but I love it in ways that make 1200 yen feel like shoplifting.
An alternative Japanese cover for the movie Lifeforce, with a naked work crucified to a satellite ejecting from a green ship orbiting Earth.A collage of shots from the movie Lifeforce wrapped around a two page spread of the story written in JapaneseA puppet zombie from Lifeforce with a hilariously full head of hair and eyebrows.A two-page spread of a Lifeforce wyvern vampire, surrounded by shots from the movie of electric current passed between vampires and innocent people.

Holy fucking shit, Japan made a game show out of the dumb Wii bowling mini game I’m moving to this country.
Hotel TV screen playing a Japanese game show with a D20 being rolled across a 4-5 lane wide bowling lane, with dozens and dozens of pins set out randomly.A bowling lane where partway down the lane is two skinny bridges, with a ball traveling down one.

Part two.
A precariously steep staircase takes off from the right, curving further right behind dense shrubs, mirroring the sidewalk and road that turn behind the stairs. On the other side of the road are short character buildings basking under a cloudy day with sun peaking through. A single red traffic light hangs above a dark green tree with a spider’s web of electrical lines draped across the background of a sloping mountain kissing low hanging clouds.

Exploring Hakone.
A red train is nestled beneath a structural arch/canopy, with a row of low hedges obscuring the wheels and a single street light facing the camera, centered directly between to rail cars.A single hip-high gate leads to an enormous swath of green trees and forest on the right. To the left of the gate is a vine-covered wall with a large, dirty white gas tank and several traffic cones.A beat up, yellowed Sengoku bus sign out of focus on the left, with layered hills of green on the right, volcano smoke pouring from one hill with an electrical pole obscuring the view.A low, wide shot of an empty road curving the left around tall green greets, and a rusted three-layered railing following the bend between the road and sidewalk.

Cancel me daddy!
The edge of a guard rail on a road in front prominent mountain layered in shades of vibrant tree leaf green with buildings speckled between the road and mountain. A neatly clean, hilly grass lawn with six prominent sculptures and a dense tree line on all sides, with two mountains rising on the left and right.A portion of quiet road heading steeply downhill into a valley, with one and two story Japanese houses and buildings on either side, with a prominent, but unobtrusive electrical tower in the foreground. At golden hour dense trees line a man-made river with 10 3-foot waterfalls curving away from yellowed green hills.

In the sip-on-whiskey-from-our-private-onsen phase of the trip. Billionaires could be doing this full time instead of ruining our lives, and that’s why I’ll never forgive.
A square 2-person tiled onsen with a bamboo spout and thick wood panel fencing on one side and thin bamboo privacy screen on the other. Between them is a spotlight shining on dense trees.

Don’t wanna get cancelled buuut Hakone is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
A series of beige arches cover a train station under steep and dense green tree line, with several lanes of traffic separating from three low rise buildings in front of another hill/mountain range.A large hotel-esque structure sits on top of a sheer drop off hill covered with thick trees, and red pedestrian bridge emerging over a river with 4 (four!) tiny rapid falls meeting walk up apartments on the other side, and mist covered mountains nestled behind the bridge.

I think this restaurant wants me to get my car drunk?
A clip-art laminated sign with Japanese language on it, and a man and woman nothing saying no to alcohol, and a cute pink anthropomorphized car is sleepily smiling and swerving with beer and hearts floating around.

Exploring Osaka.
A wide angle shot of mostly red and white neon lights against a dark night sky, hanging above clear and opaque umbrellas.A vertical shot of the first three stories and top floor of Osaka Castle partially obscured on the bottom left and top right by out of focus, draped red plastic sheets. From behind the Osaka Sun tower at the Expo ‘70 park (the tower is less a building and more a giant concrete puppet with a metal face and outstretched arms), with a wisp of iridescent cloud leaking out from the right arm like radioactive smoke. The side of a Red Bull vending machine tucked against rusting stair handrail, where white tiled stairs lead down to a vacant lot, with overgrown plants and large leaves occupying every inch.
