Probably a highlight as a Londoner getting invited to ‘The Keys’, the Yeoman Warders’ pub inside the Tower of London’s walls. It’s not open to the public and is strictly by invitation only. We were allowed to take pictures, but nothing can capture the special atmosphere. Plus £4 for a Guinness!

At Whitechapel, up in the roof space; a small sign, nailed to one of the beams by a Master Bellfounder... 'Nothing is impossible for the man who does not have to do it himself'. I've long forgotten the story, but it's still an object from the foundry that remains in my memory!

One of the beautiful parallels I drew from visits to both foundries is the essence of storytelling prompted by simple objects about the shop. At Taylor’s, Anthony was keen to tell us how the cigarette tins that housed the various foundry type stamps had him hunting for more when at car boot sales.

FWIW: My visit was not a result of a @tomscott.com video everyone has recently told me about (respectfully, I haven’t seen it!), but more a curiosity to see who is still making bells in this country after my visit to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry almost ten years ago (before they ceased operations) 🔔

It’s hard to keep going when it feels like you’re on shifting sands. It’s hard to stay creative too when you’re attempting to pour from an empty cup. But I’ve a few projects in the works to share at some point. For now, it’s about resting and recovering somehow. 3/Fin.

I'm still sad about what happened to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. I visited the foundry back in 2016; I walked past it last month, and besides it looking very unloved and no longer a hive of activity, the site has stood still since operations ceased in the spring of 2017. #London #FilmPhotography

Last weekend, I met Kit Mackintosh. Sat at a typewriter in the middle of Covent Garden, he invited people to pay what they want for a poem on a topic of their choosing. I asked him to write a poem about overcoming sadness. www.version3point1.co.uk/blog/sadness #FilmPhotography #London #Poetry

A crowd has gathered around the typist.A scan of an A4 piece of white card with lower case typewriter text; a poem about overcoming sadness by Kit Mackintosh. It reads as follows:

we exist at times uncumbered
under ashen night
we are swallowed
by those figments of our
minds
at times by reality
by those concrete agonies
that have severed us from
loved ones
and at other times
they are those accidents
of mind
those sadnesses
that are whispered
in thoughts that
exist awry
and, in the former, we wait- we patiently
see that these agonies are temporary
and for those that are writhing in
our mind- we must learn to exist in the bliss
of sensation- in not feeling
we must seek to be overcome in thoughtless ecstacy

I’m with you there with the railway museum in Kyoto. It’s so good, I’ve been multiple times. 😂
At Kyoto Railway Museum, Japan. Anne, who is very small, holding onto a handrail on the side of a very large Japanese train that leads up to the train driver’s driving cab. Love this from Hammersmith when I was heading east last weekend to see friends. Did you know that if you wave at a train driver, if we see you, it restores our souls & a bit of our HP? We will always try to wave back if it’s safe to do so - just remember to stay clear of the platform edge! #London

But as part of having to put together a ‘mood board’ for my current #Tubegeek adjacent project, here’s a few snaps taken during this week’s #MemeRailway commute. Acton Town, the variation of afternoon winter sun lighting the main concourse, and shadows/contrast on the platform:
Shadows of the art deco window frames at Acton Town London Underground Station, the light forming an irregular diamond shape on the floor in contrast to the shadows around it. Mondays. Amirite? Back in the hospital this morning (after surviving the carnage in the hospital car park..), more blood work, then computer packing in meaning I couldn’t do something semi-important before heading off to work…

Not the London weather doing a complete 360 on us this week like an _absolute arsehole_. Give me minus whatever degrees and clear skies, but please spare me the drizzle crap and the gusts. 😫
Wooden staircase with metal tread plates leading down to the station platform at Boston Manor London Underground Station on the Piccadilly line. The metal tread plates are painted yellow on the edges and there is some tactile paving also painted yellow. Afternoon sun shines onto platform and casts a long shadow where someone is standing. The Boston Manor end of Northfields Piccadilly Line Depot in the drizzle and night. The wind and drizzle is causing a halo around the floodlights.

Meanwhile: Back at work, ☀️ sunshine today in London and beautiful golden light when the sun was low this afternoon. Quite nice to bask in it briefly at Watford today when I was changing ends earlier, but it’s definitely chillier than last week! 🥶 Thank goodness for thermals! #MetLineChronicles

Had a late lunch in Brussels in one of my most favourite places in the world, À la Mort Subite. I could people-watch here for hours, and the staff and locals here are always so friendly. It’s a real ‘slice of life’ café with a rich history too that dates back to the early-20th Century.
Interior of Brussels café, À la Mort Subite. The decor is very neutral with high ceilings, cream walls and pillars, with wooden tables and chairs and bench seating. There are also huge mirrors that make the room look bigger. Anne’s rainbow hat and scarf hang on a coat hook on a nearby pillar.

Met up with @llbroadwell.bsky.social (very briefly!) yesterday morning for a walk(!) around ‘dam and a catchup, before heading back on the rails for my return journey back to London via Brussels.

I was in Amsterdam on Monday evening to see my mate’s band @86tvsband.bsky.social playing at Paradiso. Always lovely to catch up with them and having a wee boogie.
