Oct 8th - A week before she was murdered, Mrs Emily French made Leonard Vole the sole beneficiary of her will. 📽️📅 Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Witness for the Prosecution" (1957): First, a courtroom scene with a judge addressing a witness in front of the jury. The subtitle reads, "Were you aware of the arrangements Mrs. French made to dispose of her money?" Second, a close-up of an older woman in a dark hat and patterned attire, speaking into a microphone. The subtitle reads, "Yes. He was to have all her money, she told him,". Third, a similar close-up of the same woman, looking slightly to the side with a serious expression. The subtitle reads, "- When did this take place? - On October 8."

In the 'The Lustre Bowl,' (1908) William Nicholson plays with the shining contrast of the bowl against a dark black background. He would set up a still life and leave it untouched for days, absorbing every element. The flash of light lifts the picture out of the ordinary.

St Marys, tucked within the fields between Thaxted and Stansted Airport. One of the oldest churches in Essex; serves a population of about 40. Today the flights into Stansted came in low overhead. So I made a film about that - the near millennium of stone under the jet engines every three minutes.

What struck me in this very well-written and thoughtful account was the extent to which MRJ was constantly hustling - always on the hunt for the next scholarship or fellowship or post of any kind with an income, borrowing from his relations etc etc….

Book buyer’s disease, the stages: 1. Find a batch of books in a charity shop from a crime writer I haven’t read 2. Think ‘I should buy one and see if I like it’ 3. Notice they are 4 for £1 4. Think ‘What if I really like the first book?’ 5. Buy 16 books

Seems all too apt that I read quite a bit of Hermione Lee’s biography of Anita Brookner while awake in the small hours with a migraine… Thought I might have hallucinated this description of AB’s living/working arrangements, but no.
By that time - in or around 1995 - she had bought a second flat on the same floor, corner-on to Number 6, facing the street at the front. Number 8 was on the same plan as Number 6 - a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom - and was also full of books. It looked exactly the same as the other flat, but the main room had a big desk and a typewriter where she sat with her back to the window. From the mid 1990s until she stopped writing, this was where she worked, filling her ring-bound notebooks with rapid, close-filled lines of handwritten pages before they were typed up.

What scene makes you emotional no matter how many times you've seen it? (alt text - A Canterbury Tale, in particular the barely even whispered “why?” when Alison Smith finds out her late fiancé’s father is asking for her. Just the right balance of hope and fear)
