What struck me in this very well-written and thoughtful account was the extent to which MRJ was constantly hustling - always on the hunt for the next scholarship or fellowship or post of any kind with an income, borrowing from his relations etc etc….

Book buyer’s disease, the stages: 1. Find a batch of books in a charity shop from a crime writer I haven’t read 2. Think ‘I should buy one and see if I like it’ 3. Notice they are 4 for £1 4. Think ‘What if I really like the first book?’ 5. Buy 16 books

Seems all too apt that I read quite a bit of Hermione Lee’s biography of Anita Brookner while awake in the small hours with a migraine… Thought I might have hallucinated this description of AB’s living/working arrangements, but no.
By that time - in or around 1995 - she had bought a second flat on the same floor, corner-on to Number 6, facing the street at the front. Number 8 was on the same plan as Number 6 - a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom - and was also full of books. It looked exactly the same as the other flat, but the main room had a big desk and a typewriter where she sat with her back to the window. From the mid 1990s until she stopped writing, this was where she worked, filling her ring-bound notebooks with rapid, close-filled lines of handwritten pages before they were typed up.

What scene makes you emotional no matter how many times you've seen it? (alt text - A Canterbury Tale, in particular the barely even whispered “why?” when Alison Smith finds out her late fiancé’s father is asking for her. Just the right balance of hope and fear)

And off it goes, Rachel Malik’s Personal Anthology, coming down early for dinner, wearing an antique bridal gown, turning the heavy signet ring on its little finger, never walking as far as the forbidden Reservoir, moved almost to ecstasy by the scrupulously plotted fate that would redeem it…

The Secret Agent: An eccentric, sprawling & viscerally told story about Brazilian dissidents living under a military dictatorship. It’s also a love letter to 70s pop culture & culture itself as the end credits emphasise. Frustrating at times as it’s a messy narrative but also very touching.
