Naturally, the task falls to Veyla, a newly-awakened clone of an extinct Primordial species. If she fails, AION, a holographic Al owl with a flawed mission to preserve planetary balance, will succeed in her latest pursuit: wiping out every magick user with her army of nightmare-fuel bots.

On top of that, there are interplanetary tensions and cute girls with questionable agendas to contend with. Typical teenage problems.

No pressure, right? At least she has an unreasonable amount of optimism to work with!

Armed with ancient magick (that she's still kind of winging) and cutting-edge tech (mostly under control, give or take a few explosions) Veyla and her friends might just be the only ones capable of uniting people, planets, and the slightly-unhinged Al who was supposed to protect them in the first place. And if enthusiasm, stubborn hope, and the occasional wildly-improvised plan can save a system, then they've got a real shot.

The only question is: can they do it all in time?

Just another day in the life of a relic from a lost age: wildly overwhelmed, running on fumes, and improvising my way through this whole hero-in-progress thing!

The pressure's mounting for Veyla, the teenage clone of an ancient, extinct alien species. Alongside her ragtag team, Veyla races across the system with one impossible goal: restore a corrupted planetary Al owl with a goddess complex before magick disappears forever...along with all the people who wield it.

Of course, nothing ever goes smoothly. Magick is not accessible on most planets, and a botched portal jump scatters the group. Oh, and then there's Ash, heartbreak incarnate, clad in leather and smoldering with the sharp, electric tension of lightning before it strikes, who only grows more questionable by the second.

Their path winds through volcanic wastelands, singing caverns, and territories bristling with secrets and betrayal. Along the way, Veyla uncovers fragments of knowledge hidden in her DNA while also wrestling with feelings she'd rather keep buried under a mountain. There's no room for detours and no time for grief or awkward confessions. Certainly not at the Solstice Starlight Ball, where music, masks, and one unguarded dance threaten to unravel everything.

But duty doesn't wait. To stop AION from purging Elysia of all sentient life, Veyla must secure the last Al cores. And naturally, the final stop is Ash's homeworld where the core is locked behind the most heavily-guarded defenses yet, and survival might require teaming up with the one person Veyla swore she couldn't trust.

What could possibly go wrong?

Her voice is smoke and starlight, smooth yet marked by gentle ruin and burnished with rasp, with hidden barbs that catch in all the places I wish they wouldn't. She pours herself into the haunting, aching vocals, every note vulnerable and laid bare. It's beautiful but raw as an open wound, as if she cracked herself apart just enough to let the song bleed out.

I don't remember everything that happened to me while in the portal's grasp. What stuck most weren't the sights or sounds. It was the sensation of it, a nauseating prolonging that stretched me thin and warped me sideways, as if something were probing my limits to see just how far I could be twisted before something finally snapped. Instead of being instantaneous, time seemed to dilate. Everything stretched and warped while the universe took me apart piece by piece, studying each fragment with a strange, morbid curiosity. Then, it shoved me back together in some haphazard, disorganized way, deciding, "Yeah, sure, close enough."

Teleporting through the Ebonycliffs gateway wasn't travel in the ordinary sense. It was disassembly. Obliteration sprinkled with indecision and an excess of creative liberties. I was pulled in every direction at once and unraveled molecule by molecule before finally being flayed and rewoven by forces that couldn't care less if I survived the trip. Every nerve burned as though I were trapped within a funeral pyre. Every breath felt borrowed.

At some indeterminate point between existence and oblivion, after limbo got bored of playing tug-of-war with my insides, I hit the ground hard. Air punched from my lungs in a single, ragged gasp. For a few heartbeats, I was convinced I was still dying. And then came the disappointing revelation: I wasn't. I just wished I were. That was the level of misery broken gateway travel offered. Would not recommend.

I wouldn't call myself a great musician. More like dingy-dive-bar-at-midnight material at best. But I know enough to get by. My mother used to teach me every single evening, guiding my fumbling fingers with the kind of patience she didn't often have the luxury to spare. I paid close attention, not just because I wanted to learn, but also because it was one of the few activities reserved for women, thus a rare opportunity to spend precious, uninterrupted time with my mother. It was perhaps one of the only things that belonged to us. Something hers and something mine.

My mother used to say I had the voice of a goddess. Rare. Unique.

"Special," she'd call it. The silver lining to the tracheomalacia I was born with. A soft, narrow windpipe. It meant breathing issues as a kid, and it still gives me grief with every cold or respiratory bug, making them hit harder than they should. Not exactly a divine gift. But mostly these days, it just means my voice is rough. Raspy. Smoky. Distinct.

Too distinct, if you ask my father. Or brothers. It's "too unpolished" for royalty. Too masculine for a female. Too me. But my mother liked my voice. She heard something beautiful in it.

I was forged to outlast, to survive, to claw my way up, and to wrest something from the ruins left by men like our clueless conqueror. We may have lost our home, but we haven't lost the battle. Not by a long shot. We'll gather the pieces, sharpen our teeth, and return.

I clench my fists, welcoming the cold wind's sharp wake-up slap. It's better to focus on the anger. It's cleaner and easier than letting the despair crawl in. Gives me something to grip when everything else slips through my fingers. Despondency is a slow kind of death. Fury is fuel.

I was there when he hacked the Knight’s legs off and tied him to his chariot to be dragged all the way here.” Ashrah had heard the stories, and later she had followed the alarun left behind, a four-layer-long trail of blight, hate emanating from it like mist and driving the demons around into a hysteria of violence. One devil fell to its own slaves. Another sought war against the Scourge only to be incinerated by Ulorzz. Ashrah herself had slaughtered many then. Not because the alarun affected her, no. Her hatred had run deeper.

I spin in frantic circles, eyes darting through the undergrowth while my brain scrambles for answers. Did I drop it? Did it slip off during that magickal storm? My imagination helpfully supplies the worst-case scenario: the ring sinking into swampy sludge, swallowed whole while every past owner (Goldspire, her entire lineage, and probably the Primordials themselves) collectively facepalm, even from the afterlife.

They kept it safe through interplanetary wars, the collapse of their own civilization, AION's tyranny, and the founding of a magick Academy...only for me to lose it practically on day one.

And in a jungle this size? Where storms casually remodel the landscape in a manner similar to a child knocking over sandcastles for fun? Yeah. Perfect. Totally retrievable.

Bravo, Veyla. Absolutely stellar work. What's next? Misplacing Poof? Dropping an AI core down a ravine? Losing the stash of leftover birthday sweets I smuggled into my bag and am desperately trying not to solely live off of? (Please, not that.)

So... To the Primordials and every single one of Goldspire's very responsible ancestors: my sincerest apologies. Really. Hope you can find it in your cosmic hearts to forgive me.
