Magnificent bike ride on the Greenway this morning. Some beautiful moments in between the showers.

The past is another country. We have its space-time coordinates. We only need to build the craft to take us there.

I read it in Settling the World: Selected Stories (2020), but I believe it is also in his collection You Should Come With Me Now (2017). As I say, there's clear overlap between the story and stretches of the novel, but that just seems weirdly... fitting? 😀

I read this 2017 M. John Harrison story this afternoon to get a bit more background on the iGhetti and The End of Everything. Interesting to see the bits of worldbuilding that he ultimately incorporated into the novel. Plus the story itself is pleasingly unsettling.
Angled snapshot of an opening page of a story titled 'The Crisis' by M. John Harrison. Visible text reads:

You sit over a one-bar electric fire in a rented room. As soon as you feel recovered from the commute you'll boil some potatoes on the gas ring, then, three minutes before they're done, drop an egg into the same water. You can hear the family downstairs laughing at something...

It was a magnificently autumnal morning out there today. Plus I'm getting *very* close to reaching my cycling target for the year! (Sure I intend to go beyond it, but reaching it will be nice!)
A tarmacadam greenway recedes into the distance beneath trees and on either side and arching overhead. A fence is also running along the left hand side.

There are some golden fallen leaves on the ground on either side of the track.

If Ukraine takes out enough Russian data centers then I guarantee‡ people complaining online about not just The Last Jedi but <checks notes> Starfleet Academy, detached nacelles, She Hulk, Black elves, Captain Marvel, & more will also drop significantly. ‡Less a guarantee than a *very* strong vibe.

A haunting read. Probably the best novel yet written about the contemporary British polycrisis.
Cover of the novel The End of Everything by M. John Harrison. Cover is blue-tinfed and shows a stylistised beach with a single human figure.

It's probably an ADHD thing, but there's something *deeply* upsetting about being forced to engage with completely unnecessary and byzantine institutional software platforms when just sending a PDF is *right there* (and is going to end up being the solution anyway).

COVER REVEAL! This is the cover of the Fermi's Progress Christmas Special - **A VERY FERMI CHRISTMAS**! It is the work of the amazing @chrisfenoglio.bsky.social, the artist behind @ryannorth.ca's Star Trek: Lower Decks comics! Preorder it from @scarletferret.com: scarletferret.com/books/a-very...
The cover of A Very Fermi Christmas - a side on view of the Fermi flying upwards, the wake of its Alcubierre drive obliterating the planet below. The spacewarping wake of the ship resembles a Christmas tree, and the planets and stars behind the wake look like tinsel and baubles.
