Picked up Henry Shue’s Basic Rights. First paragraph is a reminder that beautiful writing and superb academic work are perfectly compatible.
Preface to the First Edition
This is a book about the moral minimum-about the lower limits on tolerable human conduct, individual and institutional. It concerns the least that every person can demand and the least that every person, every government, and every corporation must be made to do. In this respect the bit of theory presented here belongs to one of the bottom corners of the edifice of human values.
About the great aspirations and exalted ideals, saintly restraint and heroic fortitude and awesome beauties that enrich life, nothing appears here. They are not denied but simply deferred for other occasions.

Brilliant! I’d suspected that stylistic analysis would show up something interesting as On Liberty is written so differently to Utilitarianism. I’m sure many people have thought the same. But I didn’t have the skills to attempt it myself. Delighted it has been done.

A tree absorbing a headstone into itself at the Old Jewish Cemetery in Frankfurt. Very evocative image of transcendence (in Hegel’s sense of preservation but superseedence) of memory by new life.
A large tree has grown round a headstone. They are a similar colour and the headstone could almost be taken for the bark of the tree. Autumn colours with ivy growing on headstone and tree.
