I'd encourage you to get one! It's really good! Just a few notes if you do: - It uses proprietary Pilot cartridges, so you may want to buy a pack along with it - It writes VERY wet, which can be really hard on some types of paper (even paper that is usually fountain pen-friendly!)

I will say this: readership is a terrible measure of anything's worth. If something within the results or the journey rings true to your soul, march on. Nobody else will make what you make the way you want it. But please, don't burn yourself out, if you can.

I empathise. I know a handful of comic artists and have seen the turmoil firsthand. 😔 My own forays into the process have either remained short or confined to scripting. I am not averse to challenges, but this is more than I can handle.

I revel in flourishes and contemplation. I do not thrive in efficiency, for I am slow and my body aches. I would much prefer writing a novel. Whether it sees the light or day or gathers dust on a shelf, I can at least enjoy whatever time I put into it.

Some enjoy the journey regardless, but I cannot. Neither my body nor my mind are able to follow. Everything rings dissonant. It tears me apart to cram the free-flowing films in my head into neat little boxes. The singular part of the process I find myself drawn to is simply... writing.

The comic-making process can be slow and grueling, especially for longer stories tackling complex themes with detailed artstyles. Comic artists commonly struggle immensely for years; some develop strains and injuries. Yet readers spend very little time on any given panel.

To me, comics are an art of precision and restraint. A story must be streamlined and carefully cut into select panels to make its point as organically and efficiently as possible. Information is inevitably lost on the cutting floor under strict time and space constraints.

Unlike mermaids, which you will also find in both western and southern
seas, selkies prefer the cold waters of the kelp forests of the west. There
are no white sandy beaches here, just a coastline dotted with rocks, cliffs
and occasional dark sand beaches. The ocean is deeper here, and where
the kelp forests end there is an underwater cliff edge which gives way to
unfathomable depths. Great beasts loom in the deep, creatures from
stories which chill the blood in your veins.
The selkies of Strangehollow are not shapeshifters like those you may
have read about in old folk tales. They are not dissimilar to mermaids in
that their upper bodies, down to their hips, are...

It hurt me the way it did because it touches on a fundamental truth: our system uses money to legitimise everything. I am defying the established order by creating skilled artwork without payment and thus cannot be legitimate in the eyes of the sytem.

It was likely cluelessness, I agree, as I am quite certain they didn't mean any harm. This person is not a visual artist. They didn't say it to my face, it was the wording they chose to describe me somewhere, and it is technically true. It is the simplest term to qualify someone in my position.

I have been called an amateur artist, recently. It accidentally hit where it hurts. It is technically true. I do not sell my art, and usually work for non-profit projects. And yet, I put so much into my pieces that it sucked the air right out of my lungs.

I feel you, I had pantry moths a couple of years ago and it sucked 😬 I did feel bad for the grubs though, they're gross and yet still kind of cute at the same time, with their silly chubby bodies... I really would rather not have them near my food!
