Please behold my adopted son the small glass pumpkin.
A small glass pumpkin with a cute curling stem gently held between fingertips.

I have been trying to get outside and into stores more often lately, but it has been difficult through the fatigue. I find it difficult to rest after any amount of exertion. At least this little gourdy boy was there to cheer me up the other day!

Honestly, these silly little pens are too easy to collect. 😂 #fountainpen #kaweco
An assorted set of little plastic pens in lovely shades of greens and blues pleasantly sitting on a dark notebook. Their long pen caps are engraved with the words "Kaweco Sport" and "Kaweco Collection" in a reflective silver script.

I went to a stationery store the other day & grabbed my first Leuchtturm1917 notebook! Here is my inaugural merm drawing for it. The paper smells different; it is also thinner and a lot more translucent than my usual, but it still felt pleasant under my nib! #fountainpen #sketch #art #mermaid
Picture of a little sketchbook next to a little pen, held open by the artist's left hand. The first page depicts a dappled merperson with long flowy hair gently reaching towards a small fish. The pen's colour seems to match the ink very well, in a hue that is hard to define, sitting somewhere between blue, grey and green.
The artist is pleased to report the stationery store had many other beautiful notebooks, and even snagged a lovely teal one with geometric lines forming a starry pattern. That one will be used for journaling!

Today's memory merfolk doodle! I started to feel ill in the middle of it and didn't finish it as nicely as it started :'D (ignore the runaway hand, I am notoriously bad at centering compositions on sketchbook pages) #art #sketch #fountainpen #merman
Flowy merperson drawn in sage ink, crammed on one side of the page with one of their hands partially out of frame because I improvised the drawing and didn't know it'd end up there when I started. The humanoid creature is swimming up. The lower half of their body is a little bit less polished than the top.

On the left, I scribbled little swatches of all the inks I currently have on rotation in my pens. I quite like that colour palette as a whole. This sketch was done using a single colour, the third one on the list, "Sage Serenade", by Ferris Wheel Press.

My fountain pen skills are rusty and I have a nasty migraine, but I decided I'd sketch a merm and post anyway. I think I may have to lie down now 🫠 #fountainpen #sketch #art #merman
Fountain pen sketch of a merperson reaching for something. There was an attempt at shading with some hatching but the artist clearly didn't render everything through the pain.
I have a migraine and the left side of my body hurts in several places.

I actually drew this with another pen than the one depicted! I did a little switcharoo like a loathsome creature, and now you have no idea what that other pen was! Oh no! (I'm kidding, it was a Kaweco Sport with an EF nib, like the one in the picture in a different colour)

Some concept art for my friend @varu.bsky.social! This is Chestnut, another nightmare version of our D&D protagonists. She's a pixie, and she's mean! The dried blueberry is a holdover from her past. #art #d&d #fairy
Digital art of a sharp brown and green fairy with a bug-like appearance and moth wings, covered in green spikes. She has more limbs than she should, and a wicked smile. Her leafy skirt is withering, fading into chitinous bark on her body.

The artist is grateful for their friend's trust with this character. They thought it'd be fun if she became bug-like, influenced by her friend's transformation into a spider monster...!

Don't mind me while I draw yet another merfolk portrait from the same angle to test a pen! 😂 Today was a sleep-deprived sage-coloured day. I accidentally matched my Kaweco Sport. #sketch #fountainpen #merfolk
A subtle sage-coloured fountain pen doodle of a handsome merperson with a faint smile and long flowy hair. A sage-coloured fountain pen is covering the face of yet another merperson doodle. (That one didn't go well. Let us not talk about it). The artist was, coincidentally, wearing a sage-coloured shirt while drawing and typing this entire thing.

Testing out a Pilot Parallel Pen with my initials for the first time, and... I can't believe it took me that long, honestly? It's amazing for lettering. #calligraphy #lettering #sketch #fountainpen
Some calligraphy tests on a sketchbook page next to the artist's hand resting on a weirdly-shaped fountain pen with a wide steel nib. The tests are small and simple with little flourishes.

Trying out different fountain pens! I can get very fine lines out of this cheap nib, but it's been rather unpleasant to work with. #sketch #mermaid #merfolk #fountainpen
A fountain pen sketch portrait in desaturated teal depicting a merperson looking very shy and hesitant. They have a fin on their back and long flowy hair.
The picture doesn't show the silent struggle between the artist and this fountain pen as the sketch took form on the page. Why, this nib was too stiff and too dry, and the ink didn't flow all that well! How uncomfortable!

Let's see how many days this drawing streak can last before my shoulder decides it's over again! Today's fountain pen doodle from memory. #sketch #mermaid #fountainpen
Dusty pink fountain pen doodle of a floating merperson in elegant lines dropping little stars from their hands. The artist had a resurgence of chronic pain in their left arm and shoulder before doodling this, but it didn't stop them from drawing. At least not this time. When illness hits, you never really know when you'll be forced to take a break.

This ink is too pale to write with, but it is really fun for sketching. I am having a blast! #sketch #merfolk #fountainpen
Picture of a sketchbook page with a fountain pen portrait of a merperson with somewhat alien features, ear-fins fanning wide on each side of their face. Their gaze is intense, black scleras with two glowing dots staring your way. Their hair is long and floating behind them as if underwater.
This ink is very strange to use, a faded delicate pink with a sort of bloodiness to it.
The pen used to sketch it was set next to the drawing.

It is nice to be sketching more consistently these days, though it has mainly consisted in small fountain pen doodles. This one is a favourite of the past week.
A flowy sketch in somewhat scratchy yet fine pink fountain pen lines. It is of a young woman with wavy hair and a billowy gown looking back at you. There is something languid and seductive about her gaze.
A bit of ink has pooled on one side of her faint smile, and you cannot tell if it was a clumsy stroke from the artist's pen, or the suggestion of a smear of blood on her lips.

Case in point: "Carmilla" by Wearingeul behaved flawlessly, and I am equally eager to write and paint with it. (forgive my penmanship, I need to work on it)
Ink swatches of Carmilla, by Wearingeul, which is a lovely red-pink. Despite showing a degree of colour-separation, the ink looks like it is the same in both washes and writing sample. There is no drastic colour-shift between the two.

Utter betrayal. I swatched some Ferris Wheel Press "Shadows of Mordor" pen ink in wet washes on watercolour paper, and the washes all turned purple as they dried. It was a beautiful vampy red before that (see the dry swatch top right). I am VERY upset! I need to investigate.
Some ink swatches of Ferris Wheel Press "Shadows of Mordor", a very heavy and moody colour with a subtle shimmer, on watercolour paper. These are all purple, save for one singular sample: the dry swatch is a dark bloody red.

Ever get stuck on a WIP so much that it keeps you hostage? For me, it's this one, for a suspended group project. Amidst worsening inflammation and shared low morale, it has been hard to work on it. I might need to try something smaller before I can finish it... #illustration #watercolor
Cropped close-up of an unfinished watercolour piece with a couple of tools next to it, for scale. The character portrayed is a slim-faced white-haired knight of undetermined gender with intense dark eyes, in front of a gothic background. They might have wings, but you can't see them well. The rest is off-screen or obscured.

I couldn't let #mermay go by without at least one contribution, could I? I was inspired to get a personalised stamp by @pradaldi.bsky.social, and I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I hope you'll like my design! I redrew the lettering at least five times 😂 #illustration
Picture of two stamped pieces of paper and the stamp itself displayed next to each other. The stamp's design, custom-made for the occasion, depicts a merperson with elegant curves under a line of text stating "Art by Vaelyane", surrounded by little stars. The artist scattered paper stars around the result for the purpose of staging this picture. These were the product of a weeks long star-making spree from at least eight years ago, and there is a jar full of them just off-screen, which isn't visible in-frame. I remember making so many of those stars, out of used envelopes, that my fingers hurt. I completely forgot how to make them today.

TW: Spider, Araignée, Arachnophobia #drider #spider #digitalart
Digital painting of a drider, a fictional monster from the Dungeons and Dragons universe. Viewed from below, a desperate creature in various shades of orange-browns and grey, half-man and half-spider, is suspended in an ominous void, looking at itself in horror as its lower half is spinning a glossy string of silk out of its spinneret.

The spider half was heavily derived from a steatoda sitting on my windowsill at the time. I did some cursory anatomical research to reach this amount of detail, and I will defend every single hair on its body fiery passion.

There's the damned spider! I started it in 2023, when our D&D crew became temporary monster versions of themselves in a city-wide nightmare. My half-drow was twisted into a drider, a half-elf half-spider monstrosity. The DM might be bringing him back soon... and I dusted off the old digital WIP.
Cropped digital painting of a man's torso. His skin is grey, his ears are pointed and his hair leans towards an orange-brown. Two pairs of extra eyes adorn the sides of his forehead. He seems suspended in an ominous void, looking down below in horror. Something is wrong with whatever is off-screen, but a peek at the full painting might tell you more.A simple image with text on a dark background serving as a trigger warning for a depiction of a spider somewhere in the replies.

I don't think I've shared this before? This was a painterly digital sketch for a costume worn by my D&D character during a masquerade ball back in 2023, inspired by an archduke butterfly. This grey man isn't comfortable in fancy situations, which was very fun to play. :') #illustration #d&dart
A grey-skinned half-drow with tawny brown hair is wearing an ostentatious costume unfolding into butterfly wings attached to the arms. A feathered half-mask sits on his face. He wears the ruffles oddly well. You can't even tell how self-conscious he is. The man spent that entire evening wishing he could hide behind an article of furniture.

Porcelain feels so smooth under my brush! It's so much more comfortable than metal or plastic. I favour this practical rectangular one and stackable round pans! (Dear friends also gifted me a handmade palette that is so gorgeous I haven't mustered the courage to use it yet! 😔)
Photo of a an artists' painting station, showing a selection of palettes.

I've had this rectangular ceramic palette for many years now, likely bought in an art store in town. It is thick and heavy, with two rows of wells and a manufacturing flaw in the shape of a a crack in the enamel of the leftmost bottom well. This flaw isn't visible under layers of dried paint.

Running away from my problems by sketching a young man and his worms. #sketch #illustration #darkart
Digital sketch of a distinguished young man in a historical shirt with a black waistcoat, wearing an expression of wistful innocence on his face. Escaped strands of wavy hair brush over his eyes. A frog sits on his left shoulder with judging eyes, ignoring the squirming of a few worms around it. The frog and the lad are both looking at you.

Your gaze wanders down to his hand, desperately grasping at the clothes covering his own chest in a stark contrast to the calm of his face. A couple of earthworms barely wriggle out of his grip.

The worms. They curl around like his beautiful hair. You can't bring yourself to find them disgusting.

In the background, unfinished floral elements are left to wrap around him in a weave of splotchy scribbles.

Frog story in a frog-sized book.
The photographer is mostly off-screen with fingers holding a minuscule book of fables in front of a green, black and white plush frog, made by Bark's Bog. The frog looks as if it is highly focused on reading a page announcing a fable from Jean de la Fontaine: The Frog and the Ox. The fable is in French.
The photographer did not make the book. This is a real miniature book of fables with an ISBN code, unearthed anew while doing an inventory.

Watercolour painting of a kightly rabbit fiercely riding a passably distracted snail in front of an explosion of leaves.

The snail's shell looks a bit wrong, and this mistake has been haunting the artist for years despite a lingering fondness for the piece.

I had a migraine the entire day, and now I can't sleep! So I doodled this from memory to distract myself. It was very loosely inspired by Carmilla, which I read a few days ago. (if I wake up in the morning and the sketch looks bad to my rested eyes, be warned that I will delete it)
Pencil sketch of a woman with curly hair, thin limbs and clawed hands lovingly hugging another who looks trapped in her arms, apprehensive and unsure of herself.

The artist is sleep-deprived and can't type much more for want of a functioning brain. Does this sketch look good? I can't tell. My mind fell out of my ear twenty hours ago and hasn't crawled back in in under the storm of headaches I've suffered all day.

Happy Halloween! 🦇 This year, I am treating myself with the Beehive Books illuminated version of Carmilla, illustrated by @hirosemary.bsky.social ❤️‍🔥
An open book on a wrinkled bedsheet, featuring a full-page illustration of two 19-century women gazing at each other and holding arms in front of an ominous tapestry of Cleopatra handling the snake that would be fatal to her. It was drawn by Rosemary Valero-O'Connel (Bluesky @hirosemary) for Beehive Books. The light silhouette of the two young women starkly contrasts with the mostly blood-red backdrop.

Going through some old art today! The quality of my work was inconsistent at the time, but I found a couple of old gems. I painted this arcanine in 2015 back when I was stubbornly trying to blend with the wrong brush. I left the tumblr link on it for authenticity. :'D #throwback #fanart #pokemon
Digital fan-painting of an arcanine gracefully floating in front of a yellow squiggly line, bathed in warm light. The pokémon's fluffy fur was very lovingly rendered in a variety of shades of beige.

For an older piece painted in bed on a laptop ten years ago as a gift to a friend, it holds up surprisingly well in its shapes and flow compared to the artist's current work, although the anatomy appears less confident, and the rendering style is somewhat different.

For authenticity's sake, the artist posted this piece as it was, tumblr link included.

Arcanine and Pokémon are the intellectual property of Nintendo.

'tis done! My paper crimes have paid off, at last! The back of my watercolour paper is more unforgiving than the front, but it lent itself beautifully to layering. This painting was a success! #illustration #watercolor #merman #traditionalart
Watercolour painting of a merperson in various shades of blue and peachy pinks. Their hair, tail and tentacles curl delicately throughout the composition.

This was a very satisfying sampling of "blood". (I messed up my quote-post, my bad)
Three different swatchcards of deep red inks aligned on a desk, each dramatic in its own right. One of them looks like a brown-ish sample of dried blood, one of them looks like a colourful splash of fresh blood, and one of them is a deep berry shade, too pink to be bloody compared to the other two. All three swatches look highly satisfying to the artist hidden behind the camera.

All three inks were meant for pens instead of painting. Used with a dip pen, they look rather similar to each other, only revealing their unique complexity when mixed with water in a wash.

They were, in order from left to right:
Private Reserve Ink - Vampire Red
Diamine - Copper Red
Diamine - Oxblood

Testing some ink made for pens today! Pros: Smoothness! Colour! Joy! Cons: That brush will bleed red ink for the rest of my life. 🩸
Art supplies arranged on a table. A wet-on-wet inkwash swatch card rests on a closed watercolour box in an effusion of sanguine reds. Thankfully, this isn't a crime scene.

The brushes in-frame look clean and ordinary... at first glance. No red ink stains the ferrule of the green-leaning one. Wet it, however, and you will be greeted with a stubborn red leak, haunting whatever surface it touches.

The little stinker has been dipped in clear water and rinced over a hundred times, to no avail.

Stop! ⛔️✋️ This is a WIP checkpoint. QRP with your current WIP! I'm still stuck on these (and a big secret hidden painting)! Life has been A Lot and I've been focusing on everything but painting this year.
Photo of an artist's table easel with three different watercolour paintings haphazardly strewn over it. One is mostly red, one is mostly blue, and one is bluish-green. They all look unfinished.

The leftmost painting is gothic and tall, an effusion of intricate details. There is a horse. And a gaggle of knights. No wonder that one is taking so long.

The paper on the rightmost painting was sadly very torn from leaving masking fluid on too long, but you probably can't see it from afar. The artist is reluctant to give it up and believes it is possible to cover it up with acrylagouache, though this WIP has been left on hold for a couple of years already. It is a bit scary.

The middle painting is much simpler than the other two. A single character, posing dramatically. Come on, finish this one, at least! You're so close!

Macro picture of a bee's behind awkwardly sticking out of a purple flower. This image isn't very crisp, but it's hilarious. The photographer was crouching with a phone in hand next to the bushes to take it.

Crimes in progress.
Work in progress of a watercolour painting depicting a blue and peach merperson, in an elegant pose. It is the same merperson from a previous post. Mermay is still ongoing.

At first glance, everything looks normal. The painting is visibly unfinished and needs some contrast and polish, although you wouldn't guess it was painted on the wrong side of the paper. Off-screen, the artist is cursing himself for not choosing a simpler, smaller subject for his ridiculous test.

Flowy digital linework representing a merperson with long hair and tentacles. They look down, lost in thought, like a marble statue suspended in time. What are they thinking about?

I finished this watercolour piece just yesterday! Proud of myself for making something, despite current circumstances. 💪 I had a few tricks up my sleeves to keep things symmetrical, this time. #artsky #illustration #watercolor
Watercolour painting of a winged cat monster reminiscent of medieval marginalia, in front of a stone frame. It is facing you, and blepping aggressively with the cheekiest expression you can picture on a ragdoll cat. Anyone familiar with gothic architecture in the general Rhine river area might recognise the peculiar colour of the stone as a local construction material.

There are pretzels in the decorative frame, and the artist is still giggling to himself off-screen about adding those in.

Somewhat loose pencil sketches of two unicorns, done from memory. The biggest one is leaping, or perhaps floating. The other one stands proudly despite looking much rougher, smaller, with a strong body and a tiny head. Both unicorns feel reasonably recognisable as horses, despite any weird inaccuracies in their anatomy.

Pencil sketches on printer paper scattered on an off-white blanket next to a graphite pencil.

I haven't found much energy to paint, lately! Most of it has been going to some art I can't share yet, but I did make progress on something else yesterday: this pink sandstone frame.
Art supplies scattered on the surface of a wooden table easel. In the middle, an unfinished watercolour painting represents a pink-brown cinquefoil stone frame of medieval inspiration. Inside the frame remains the light sketch of a strange winged cat creature.

On the top right sits a blotchy colour study of the same painting, with swatches and notes. The artist selected a palette of mostly browns, with some teal blue.

Watercolour painting of a sphinx-centaur, with the upper body of a woman, and the lower body of a winged lion, laying on three pillows. She seems to be sleeping while holding a feather in her hand. Her hind paws and tail are curled up in her gentle slumber, and her front paws look like they're lightly moving in her sleep.

Altered black and white sreenshot from the original 1922 Nosferatu silent film. The image depicts bald vampire count Orlok with an uncanny human grin, his left hand giving a thumbs up. Both of these elements are absent from the original film.
Under the screenshot, bold white letters in a retro font spell the word "Yesferatu".

This has to be my favourite illustration for the butch fairy zine, painted last year. Something about it just makes me smile. The original is quite small, too! I now wonder how my garden fairies would handle the winter. What do you think? #illustration #watercolor #fairy #fantasyart
A weevil-inspired fairy stands taking notes next to a stalk of hollyhocks. A hammer hangs on her belt, and the hollyhocks frames the left side of the composition. Behind her, a fairy sitting on a branch is pulling a tortoiseshell full of berries up a tree, thanks to a system of pulleys.

Anyway, here is a random portrait from memory sketched in bed while I couldn't sleep, the other day. It's my third sketch of the year, and the first one I'm posting! #sketch #pencilsketch
Pencil sketch portrait of a young man with short wavy hair and an undercut, wearing a bandana around his neck. His gaze is both intense and wary.
