In AN 3.102, the Nimittasutta, the Buddha says the practices of immersion (samādhi), exertion (paggaha), and equanimity (upekkhā) need to be properly balanced to develop the higher mind, just as a goldsmith carefully tends to gold in the crucible, fanning it, dousing it, or letting it be. #Buddhism
“Mendicants, a mendicant committed to the higher mind should focus on three bases from time to time: the basis of immersion, the basis of exertion, and the basis of equanimity.

If a mendicant dedicated to the higher mind focuses solely on the basis of immersion, it’s likely their mind will incline to laziness.

If they focus solely on the basis of exertion, it’s likely their mind will incline to restlessness.

If they focus solely on the basis of equanimity, it’s likely their mind won’t properly become immersed in samādhi for the ending of defilements.

But when a mendicant dedicated to the higher mind focuses from time to time on the basis of immersion, the basis of exertion, and the basis of equanimity, their mind becomes pliable, workable, and radiant, not brittle, and has become rightly immersed in samādhi for the ending of defilements. It’s like when a goldsmith or a goldsmith’s apprentice prepares a forge, fires the crucible, picks up some native gold with tongs and puts it in the crucible. From time to time they fan it, from time to time they sprinkle water on it, and from time to time they just watch over it. If they solely fanned it, the native gold would likely be scorched. If they solely sprinkled water on it, the native gold would likely cool down. If they solely watched over it, the native gold would likely not be properly processed. But when that goldsmith fans it from time to time, sprinkles water on it from time to time, and watches over it from time to time, that native gold becomes pliable, workable, and radiant, not brittle, and is ready to be worked. Then the goldsmith can successfully create any kind of ornament they want, whether a bracelet, earrings, a necklace, or a golden garland.

It is easy to see the faults of others, But truly difficult to see one’s own. One sifts out the faults of others like chaff, But conceals one’s own, As a deceitful gambler conceals a corrupt dice throw. Dhammapada 252, Peter Feldmeier translation #Buddhism

Reading about the decline of Buddhism in India and it's less surprising that Buddhism was extirpated there than that it survived as long as it did. All the social functions that Brahmins performed - divination, medicine, advice on government and war - monks are literally forbidden from doing that.

As Zihu was hoeing the ground, he pressed down on the hoe. Turning around, he looked at Shengguang and said, "It's not that there's nothing to do, but if you've got an attitude, you err."
Shengguang immediately asked, "What is there to do?"
Zihu kicked him in the chest, knocking him down. At this Shengguang was enlightened.

Under Buddhist ethics, killing a small creature is traditionally held to be less negative kamma than killing a large creature. But a human life is always worth more than an animal life, because only beings in the human realm or above can comprehend the dhamma. Another W for Buddhism.

Keeping the first precept seems easy at first but if you're very serious about it it's quite difficult. Mainly because you can't kill bugs. Not even termites eating your house. And if you have a pet you can't put it to sleep if it becomes terminally ill.

Some day I'll write a post about how the Buddha's dialogue with Ajātasattu's minister about the Vajjian Republic (in DN 16) is a subtle critique of democracy (given that the Vajjis are ultimately defeated) but if anyone knows what I'm talking about they can kind of work out the argument already

Mendicants, the eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around the eight worldly conditions. What eight? Gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, pleasure and pain. AN 8.5, Paṭhamalokadhammasutta, Sujato translation #Buddhism
Gain and loss, fame and disgrace,
blame and praise, and pleasure and pain.
These qualities among mankind are impermanent,
transient, and perishable.

An intelligent and mindful person knows these things,
seeing that they’re perishable.
Desirable things don’t disturb their mind,
nor are they repelled by the undesirable.

Both favoring and opposing
are cleared and disappeared, they are no more.
Knowing the stainless, sorrowless state,
they who have gone beyond rebirth
understand rightly.”

Up until recently, the way the genpub has been reacting/adapting to advances in AI has reminded me in a diagonal way of this old joke
A Jewish grandmother is watching her grandchild the beach. Suddenly, a huge wave comes and sweeps the child out to sea.

She falls to her knees, raises her arms to the sky, and says, "Lord, I have been a faithful servant all my life. I have never asked you for anything. Please, I beg you, save my only grandson."

A tremendous bolt of lightning splits the sky, and a deafening clap of thunder shakes the beach. Immediately, the waters part, and a beam of sunlight shines down on the child as he stands on a rock in the midst of the parted sea.

The grandmother rushes over in tears. After hugging the child, she looks at him and turns toward the sky: "He had a hat!"
