It's a recurring pattern: 1) Introduce a new feature that makes people's information more widely available by default. 2) Offer the ability to opt-out through some convoluted control that 90%+ won't find or use correctly. 3) Proclaim that users have real privacy choices and chose to opt in.

The broader context is that he wanted to make people's Facebook statuses publicly searchable, which meant encouraging them to not use privacy settings to make their Facebook status private.

Yeah I'm on it.
I don't know if the amount will be the vast majority of our users though- that seems like a lot to ask with the
expectation that they still share as much. What percentage were you thinking?

Here's a great one: nmdoj.gov/wp-content/u... It's a 2009 email from Mark Zuckerberg, in which he acknowledges that "90%+ of these folks...probably don't understand their current privacy settings."

Hey --
I don't think that making the privacy more open will affect the level of sharing for 90%+ of these folks because they
probably don't understand their current privacy settings or care about who sees their updates. For most of these people,
their friend lists aren't that private. Also, I don't think we saw any dissonance with the CNN public posts either even though
we didn't call out the privacy change there.
I'd expect us to be able to get 80-90% conversion to public streams. I'd do something like this:
1. Notify people that people will now be able to search their streams on the site. Give them a chance to change their
privacy settings but obviously don't encourage it.
2. Roll out search such that stream info is available but the names are perhaps somewhat obscured. I'd maybe print first
names, but have them link to profiles if you can see the profile. Over time we'll add back in the last names once we set the
proper user expectation.
3. This doesn't mean you can see everyone's individual streams publically just yet. At first this will just be an aggregate
stream search, but we'll get to the state where individual streams are public soon. (This will be valuable to make streams
exportable via Platform. If we want to be really ambitious, we can even try to do this now, but I'd probably roll it into when
we have users make their whole profiles public.)
4. Bonus points: release a search API so every site that makes Twitter search mashups switches over to FB.
Feel free to share this directly with anyone.
Mark

Most ad blockers don’t actually block the Meta Pixel or Google Analytics, and they certainly don’t block server-to-server transmissions (e.g., Meta’s Conversions API). Rather than blaming the victim for not using tools that won’t help them, the AP should blame the real culprit, lack of enforcement.

SF City Attorney's office says Meta's response is "astonishing"
Statement from SF City Attorney's Office:

“We find Meta’s response astonishing. Meta appears less concerned about whether they’re guilty of exploiting children than whether San Francisco should say anything about it. Meta has bigger problems to solve here than determining our jurisdiction.

"To be clear, San Francisco consumers can access the unlawful ads through Meta online spaces. In that way, Meta is serving California consumers, including San Franciscans, with advertisements that contain unlawful, sexually explicit material.

"The San Francisco City Attorney is empowered under state law to act in the name of the People of the State of California to address unfair, unlawful, and fraudulent business practices across the State. Our letter to Meta simply asks that the company stop violating the law.”
