Alliance governors, led by @governorferguson.bsky.social & @mattmeyerde.bsky.social, are calling on Congress to stop the assault on clean air & state authority. There’s still time to do the right thing. Learn more: usclimatealliance.org/press-releas...
Statement from U.S. Climate Alliance Co-Chairs Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and Delaware Governor Matt Meyer:

“Targeting these longstanding waivers is a direct assault on state authority — and an assault on the American people and their fundamental right to breathe clean air. We urge Congress to reject this harmful scheme to undermine the Clean Air Act, which has for decades empowered states to adopt pollution reduction standards that best protect their communities. Governors across the Alliance will not be deterred from advancing solutions that make America safer, more affordable, and healthier for everyone.”

All across America, union members are building clean energy & delivering on the promise of climate action. This #LaborDay, the Climate Jobs National Resource Center & the U.S. Climate Alliance are spotlighting a few stories of workers making a difference in their communities.
Spotlighting America’s Climate-Ready Workforce
Spokane, Washington: "As union members, we are fortunate enough to go through four years of apprenticeship training, studying in and out of the classroom to become journeymen. It is so satisfying to look out at that Washington skyline and know you've had a part in its making. Now through climate work we have a chance to build a new America.”East St. Louis Illinois: Corey is a graduate of the Climate Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which opens doors to union apprenticeships for communities across Illinois to train an inclusive and equitable clean energy workforce. Thanks to the training program, Corey is a union carpenter apprentice and framer, working on projects throughout the St. Louis region.
Queens, New York: "With all the extreme weather we’re seeing, it’s clear that climate change is affecting our livelihoods. As an IBEW Local 3 apprentice, I believe it’s important that union workers who are trained to do the job right lead the way on renewable energy because we only have one planet for us and our families.”

Why Batteries Are Key to California’s Renewable Energy LeadershipGovernor Gavin Newsom announced that California’s battery energy storage now exceeds 21,000 Megawatts, making it one of the largest battery arsenals in the world.Growing California’s battery storage has been an essential part of the state’s path towards 100% zero-carbon electricity by 2045. Batteries are important because they help store electricity produced during periods of abundant solar generation and send it back to the grid when demand is high.Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, California’s battery storage capacity has grown more than 2,500%.

🌡️Yet another heat wave is gripping much of the U.S., a stark reminder that climate change is already impacting our health & livelihoods. Across the country, cities & states are taking action to help Americans beat the heat ⬇️
Detroit is taking a coordinated, citywide approach to extreme heat under Mayor Mary Sheffield through a new executive order that directs all departments to prioritize resident and worker safety during high-temperature events. The order establishes an ongoing extreme heat response plan and requires agencies to implement and share safety guidelines, particularly for outdoor workers.in 2025, the Minnesota Department of Health launched its Stay Cool Minnesota campaign, which engaged Minnesotans, public health professionals, emergency managers, and more with multi-lingual outreach on how to stay hydrated, informed, and cool.Under Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s leadership, the county has expanded urban tree canopy in parks, added shade shelters at transit stops, installed air conditioning in 1,700 public housing units, and implemented cool roofs across many public buildings. To ensure residents have access to timely, actionable information, the county maintains a trilingual heat information website and partners with trusted community organizations to communicate risks effectively. In May, Governor Katie Hobbs announced progress on extreme heat preparedness initiatives, with preliminary data showing that heat related deaths and emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses declined in 2025.

As Americans confront the rapid growth of AI data centers, Alliance governors are stepping up to protect ratepayers, communities & the environment.  From New York to Oregon — & beyond — governors are working to establish strong guardrails & tackle data centers’ growing impacts.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order placing a one-year moratorium on all data centers larger than 50 megawatts while the state works to develop new regulations. The state is also creating a Community Investment Framework to help communities benefit from data centers post-moratorium.New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill just signed legislation creating a new ratepayer class for data centers that will ensure they pay for their own energy use and associated grid infrastructure. Sherrill also released a comprehensive framework for data center investment in New Jersey that includes the development of strong statewide standards for Community Benefits Agreements. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signed into law a three-year pause on new data center tax breaks, instead investing the $57 million estimated revenue into childcare, rural hospitals, and food assistance in the state’s new 2026 budget.Through its POWER Act, signed into law last year by Governor Tina Kotek, the Oregon Public Utilities Commission recently approved a rate hike for large energy users, including data centers. The POWER Act created a new rate class for these large users and required them to pay for their share of electricity usage.

Air pollution is a major health problem, but what actually helps clean our air? Actions at the state level to advance nature-based solutions, environmental justice, clean transportation, & more are crucial to cleaning the air we all breathe.
Air Pollution is a Major Health Problem. Here's What Helps.Looking to Nature: Nature offers a powerful path to cleaner air — in the U.S. alone, trees remove about 17.4 million tons of pollutants from the air each year. In 2024, Governor Tony Evers increased Wisconsin’s tree-planting goal to 100 million trees by the end of 2030. By the end of 2025, the state was more than halfway toward meeting this goal.Bolstering Public Transit: Tailpipes on cars, trucks, and other vehicles emit dangerous pollutants into the air. Making it easier to bike, walk, and take public transit helps reduce these emissions. Governor Mikie Sherrill in March signed an executive order requiring improvements to the commuter experience in New Jersey, including making facilities more accessible for all.Prioritizing Environmental Justice: Low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous communities bear disproportionate impacts of pollution and poor air quality. Last year, under Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota awarded $4.83 million to establish community-based air quality monitoring networks in the Twin Cities metro area, prioritizing projects that emphasize environmental justice.
