the first game i worked on extensively, "An Outcry", is on sale at a low 50% off with the Steam autumn sale! it's got those autumn-night colors, takes place in october, and has some jack-o-lantern type birds! (don't worry about the birds.) store.steampowered.com/app/1817470/...
A flurry of silhouetted cars with red taillights, bumper on bumper, streaming down a busy road. On the left of the road is a tall building - a subway station - built by Otto Wagner. On the right, there is an apartment building, and a tiny person in purple. There is text at the top, which reads: "The Vienna city belt."A rotten, soot-covered political poster for a political party called "AFP", in front of the Austrian flag. The candidate's face is scratched and burnt away. Text at the top reads, decoding the poster: "'We will not be silence!' (Our crimes should go unpunished.)A man-sized, raven-like being with a black mask and glowing, burning insides, opening its beak and jovially holding up a beer-bottle while smoking a cigarette. A textbox at the bottom of the screen, spoken by this being, reads: "settle down among your kin, have a drink, kid, settle in!"The courtyard of a Vienna apartment building, covered in grey birds with glowing orange eyes. Most of the screen is bathed in darkness; only a spotlight shines on the person who emerged out into it, a bald person with a bandage around their head and a black censor bar over their eyes. Text at the bottom of the screen reads: "Your curtain may be calling. Breathe, unnamed. Know what you have to do."

Lufia 2 isn't THAT much stronger in terms of combat since it's pretty easy to break but the IP system adds a nice bit of dynamism and also because there's a balance between combat and puzzles which keeps either side from getting overplayed.
010
.Flow @urxflow.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
it's been a hot minute since I've played Lufia 1, but the high encounter rate plus simplicity of encounters means you generally approach all fights the same way. there isn't much nuance or excitement, so it's easy to get sick of fights.
210
.Flow @urxflow.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I'm a fan of random encounters that don't actually give exp or anything; because if you design it with that sort of intent it means going into a dungeon is more a matter of managing resources than grinding. It means you can know exactly how strong a player is and tune things appropriately.
010
.Flow @urxflow.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
meanwhile i think ffiv ds is vastly the better game over the original because random encounters have spice and are properly dangerous. other games settle on them being reasonable challenges, some have them just as padding.
041
.Flow @urxflow.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
random encounters in jrpgs are like any design choice, they aren't inherently good or bad. lufia 2 is undeniably a better game than lufia 1 and that's in part because they mostly abandoned random encounter design that didn't work with the first game.

I've been banging the drum a bit on Hypernet Explorer whenever I see it pop up in my feed since there's a number of people I know that have been got by it. It's embarrassing that they're trying to hide it on Steam too given that they've been very public about it elsewhere. Double loser behavior.

I have another pitch for a micro-review I might pass your way in a couple of weeks; just didn't want to blow up your submissions while you're already busy with the second issue. Features I'd need to really think about so I don't have any concrete ideas at the moment.

With so many industries being eviscerated by AI and hiring being at an all-time low it's increasingly harder to find work as money just continues to pour into the AI fire to keep the scam going as long as possible.

It's really been a consistent disaster; I thought the acquisition of Blizzard at the time was a boon because it got us out from under the thumb of Kotick but it's been clear since then that Microsoft will just gut everything they acquire.
