My lab will be busy at COLM 2026! 1. Main conference: - Capability Provenance in Language Models: A Case Study in Social Reasoning arxiv.org/abs/2606.19625 We present a method for answering causal hypotheses about where in a dataset behaviors emerge. We apply our method to social reasoning.

Looking forward to seeing how D&S builds on the existing work in this space and charts new ground from there. I hope other organizations and funders put their efforts into this space.

Before this project launched, I enjoyed discussing our CHI paper with Aiha from @datasociety.bsky.social , who had excellent questions and insights. This projects case study on coders brought back memories of the framework verification on sociotechnical immunity we did with software engineers.

We proposed a solution: building 🛡️ sociotechnical immunity so that work with AI is DIGNIFIED-- protect expertise, agency, and dignity.(not just faster, better, quicker). Honestly, I wish more people were looking at this. Im glad to see a whole program built around it.

We studied 🩺 cancer doctors using AI for an entire year. Finding-- while the AI made the metrics better, there was a hidden cost: it was deskilling them. Sadly, the AIs productivity boost hid the erosion underneath, making the deskilling asymptomatic (which is why its so hard to catch).

The hype tells us its a replacement story. In reality, its an erosion story: of skills, agency, and self-worth. That erosion is the focus of our award-winning #CHI2026 paper, From Future of Work to Future of Workers. arxiv.org/abs/2601.21920

Data & Society just launched Worker Lens on the AI Economy, It's asking a question I've spent almost half a decade on. So I read it closely 👀. Some parts that stood out: Most future of work studies miss the workers. Many count jobs. Far fewer ask what happens to the workers. The hype tells us...

This worker is not alone in feeling like this. Even cancer doctors feel like AI "button pushers". The "soul sucking" is the identity commoditization part. More? Check out this award-winning piece at #CHI2026 to learn more about how AI hollows out workers asymptomatically. bsky.app/profile/upol...

This paper needs to influence HCI in a major way. Included these findings in a teacher AI literacy workshop this summer and it is one of the lasting impressions the teachers took away. They really empathized with seeing other professionals lose skill and identity and I think it shocked them.

Despite all the "missed takes" and imperfections in the paper, I just wish my past self knew how good he was (and thus kinder to himself). All of us should be kinder to not just our present selves but our past selves. A lot of peace can come from that.

I cherish that a lot when I reread them years later. It reminds me of an Upol at a time in his life that I might have forgotten. Those reminders help me never get complacent on the current one because I know how much he gave to the process. There's no way in hell I'd let him down with this one

Every single paper I've ever published encodes in its words a part of me that only I know and can see: joys, tragedy, struggle, determination, relentlessness, pursuit for excellence, despondency. It's a dissonance to be able to decode something so private in a public artifact.

Went to local fair today. AI slop was everywhere. All the food vendors printed out similar looking designs, making it really hard for anyone to stand out. Food pictures were so AI'ed up that you miss the badly designed MS paint ones. Welcome to enshittification of the small joys of life.

For those who write tenure letters: you play an important role here. For the last few years I include a statement that the funding environment is bad and while any funding wins should be celebrated, lack of fundraising success should no longer be used as a meaningful metric for tenure.

Glad they might retire it. These platforms often facilitate Temu-user studies. Cheap + poor quality. mTurk has been bad since 2018/19. My hope is that it will push for better human evals but the more likely outcome is a total replacement of so-called crowdsourcing with LLM responses.

These days, I mostly do Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) sessions where the audience drives the conversation. It's risky. I can't prepare like I would for a structured talk. But it gives me something better: a chance to learn what actually matters to the community I'm talking to. 5/n

✨ The most energizing part was often the Q&A. And more specifically, it's the "off-topic" questions around broader issues that generated the most enthusiasm and value. 💡I used to think of that as noise, when, in fact, it was signal. It was a feature not a bug. 2/n

Initial [AI-LLM] operational gains hid ``intuition rust'': the gradual dulling of expert judgment. These asymptomatic effects evolved into chronic harms, such as skill atrophy and identity commoditization.
