In this post AI world, @wootenomics.bsky.social gave some good advice. Use LLM to summarize your teaching evaluation comments. Not only does it do a good job of summarizing, but due to its pro-social nature, the LLM softens the blow for you.

We find that Black and Asian faculty receive lower scores on average. More difficult classes have lower scores. Beauty and Humor increase scores while accents have a strong negative effect. We find that sentimental values explain about 30% of the variation in SET scores.

When evaluating the top 20 departments, we find that women are perceived to be more difficult than men in 13 of the 20 departments. When we look at race, minority faculty are viewed slightly more difficult.

Jose Fernandez @uoflecon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
The gap in sentimental values persist for gender, but is more muted for race.

Jose Fernandez @uoflecon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Numerical scores demonstrate a gap both by instructor gender and race.

Economics receives fewer positive comments compared to other disciplines. We spark less joy and more sadness, fear, disgust, and anger. We have a reputation problem and need to fix it.

Jose Fernandez @uoflecon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
We use sentimental analysis to student evaluations of teaching (SET). This allows us to place a numerical value on the sentiment found in the comments. You need a lot of data to tease these effects out so we turned to ratemyprofessor. You can even classify comments with emotions.

Jose Fernandez @uoflecon.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
This was such a fun paper to write. The premise is that we know of the numerical gender gap found in teaching evaluations. Often you are told to ignore those numerical scores and just focus on the comments. Well, what if the comments are also biased? Let's do a thread of the figures.

A challenge I think we are going to face is that people do not know what they do not know. AI can produce the correct output, but if we are unable to understand the output it may not be useful. AI building code is great for coders who know code and can tailor. No so great for non-coders.

BOTTOM: Causal Inference Mental Gymnastics.
unmeasured confounds could explain the effect
the sample might suffer from selection bias

RA's are usually viewed as service for us because it takes a lot more teaching than to do the task oneself. But you do hope that you are passing on some experience.

Thank you for the perspective. I agree things are complex. I am just wondering a quickly adoption will happen and if it will be more widespread or concentrated.

Real question, won't AI just multiply the resource chasm between researcher at R1's and other universities? I can't get a paid RA, much less a team of RA's. Now, it seems almost malpractice if RA's are not being taught how to use AI to make the PI 10x per RA more productive.

I have used R markdown files heavily. Include templates for assignments, CV's, papers, etc. I have not used Quatro as much and do not see an easy transfer yet. But this is due to lack of knowledge. Second, I teach using rstudio. Positron does not feel as beginner friendly.

Jose Fernandez @uoflecon.bsky.social · 17/02/2026
Have you tried Positron yet? I primarily use Rstudio. I have installed positron, but haven't found a good workflow yet.
