My understanding is that VW was a hail mary by the plantation class to stay in the US while keeping slavery via kicking the can with gradual emancipation (which ended up in the Emancipation Proclamation). ...Yes, more complicated than that... But gradual emancipation was/is BS to even contemplate.

Interesting choice of companies. Didn't Tesla dump a bunch of workers in favor of H1B holders? BITD it was considered the killer hack to get cheap labor. More lately I've seen it used to keep the literally most qualified person in the industry here (who later moved to a better job, but hey.)

Easily my favorite detail:

There was the incident that became known as "the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with
the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight — which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch
P01 during flight. She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were
integrated into the program.

A thing I don't dig about 6.8×51mm ... is it invites making the wrong decision. Training variant of ammo? Once had an LT ask during a patrol inspection why we weren't carrying decon packets. There were only blue packets. It's unclear there were any green ones, anywhere.

I've never heard of this. SIL rented his for his PhD graduation earlier in the year... "You would think" need to own a PhD gown > need to own a HS gown. (My college graduation didn't include cap & gown, was in December. Just a lot of bad jokes from the MC.)
