Sen. Susan Collins enjoys the reputation of bringing home the bacon for Maine, but this is an attractive fiction.
Once the “big, beautiful bill” was advanced to the Senate floor, Collins’ newfound opposition counted for nothing. Was it a coincidence that Collins received a $2 million corporate contribution the day before voting to advance it?
This Collins-enabled bill took $1 trillion out of Medicaid spending to enable the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s tax cut for the wealthy. Medicaid covers about 30% of Mainers, about 400,000 people. About 30,000 Mainers will likely lose it under the new federal budget, and that means more uncovered care that hospitals will have to provide.
Many Maine hospitals are already on the ropes and will be forced either to close or cut services. We have seen some of this already. Eleven birthing centers have closed in the last 10 years. Statewide, there have already been many service closures in primary care and pediatrics. More will be coming.
Sen. Collins has proven that she cannot or will not stand up for Mainers when the pressure is on. Troy Jackson has the grit and passion to do just that. That’s why he has my vote.
