Some people get into political activism not because they want to change their material circumstances for the better, but because they enjoy righteously condemning everyone who is not as morally pure and radical as they are. You can't work w/ these people because they'll never be satisfied-Max Dubler

Today we got access to a smoking gun document from ICE that shows how it is weaponized against progressive groups registering voters while building a voter suppression database.

Sorry then. There are multiple threads and I was mixed up. I thought this was the chain that began with my post about Mamdani’s hypocrisy for not holding the US to account for its own atrocities in his 9/11 remarks

“Please show me one historical instance where US regime change was good for the country or the broader region” Japan and Germany. And you may want to read more about what Japan was doing to Japanese, Korean and Chinese citizens before deciding whether the world is better off.

There’s a big difference between the decision to attack the Taliban, Al Qaeda in retaliation and the 20 years of bullshit that followed. When it went sideways, they should’ve left. But the initial decision was justified. To get back to the original topic, Mamdani is a bitch for not calling that out
000
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 2h
Yeah, and that’s where I started. Mamdani was wrong for not calling that out on 9/11.

unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 2h
And if you want to make huge leaps in logic start with this one: you thought it was ok for Mamdani to not mention Afghans and Iraq on 9/11 therefore you must be ok with what the U.S. did there.

You don’t see the disconnect? It occurs somewhere between Japan & Germany were better off after regime change and the assumption that I’m ok with atrocities. Japan WAS much better off AND firebombing=bad. To bring it all full-circle: Mamdani could’ve called out the US atrocities on 9/11 and didn’t.

Perhaps all the more reason for Mandan to have mentioned it on 9/11, yeah? That was the point of this thread, after all: his double-standard re: the atrocities the US has committed

AYFK. You all seem unable to distinguish between ann initial decision to go in vs outcomes so this conversation would be a waste. Yes, he was in Afghanistan and participated in training Al Qaeda. Yes, he moved after the invasion. Yes, the Afghanistan war was a shitshow.

Can we just give up on this "poor al-Qaeda, bin Laden, Taliban" thread now? The stupidity of it is exhausting.

unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 13h
You're just going to keep changing the subject 🙄 OK, each of the countries above preemptively murdered 100s of thousands - or millions - of civilians. Yes, a country that starts a war and then loses will be occupied until proven to be stable and less murdery. The US/Allies have done so successfully.

Children never deserve to suffer or die. Which is why most people - but especially parents - try to avoid war at all costs. But that doesn't answer the question. I think you say Bush and some of his administration should be held accountable for civilian deaths in Iraq. But why not US citizens? ...

unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 17h
Try to follow the thread. I never defended US actions in Japan, Iraq or Afghanistan. I said that the initial decision to go into Afghanistan to get the person claiming responsibility for 9/11 was right. And wasn’t comparable to the decision to go into Iraq. That’s all.

I'm Jewish and zionist. But I despise the right wing, Netanyahu, settlers... like I despise MAGA, Trump, Bush. I'm horrified by the suffering in both Israel and Gaza. But Mamdani's post is in poor taste. Esp. since he commemorated 9/11 w/Bush w/o mentioning that the US response killed 100,000 Iraqis
110
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 18h
You think he keeps it real? He just commemorated 9/11 without even mentioning that the US killed 100,000 innocent Iraqis in response. He was face to face with Bush and said nothing.
000
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 18h
Assuming you're an American. . . your country murdered over 100,000 Iraqis after being attacked on 9/11. Where are your posts demanding the US be held accountable?
220
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 19h
And yet, he didn't do that on 9/11

Mamdani literally just gave a speech on 9/11 that didn't mention the Afghanistan or Iraq wars or their innocent victims.

I'm pretty sure we're all aware that they failed, thanks 🙄. Conflating Iraq and Afghanistan is idiotic. Fin.
100
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 20h
No. But you asked specifically about occupation and regime change. There was no chance that the US - having the how/who/where of 9/11 planning WASN'T going to go in and attempt to dismantle al-Qaeda Afghanistan. The fact it went sideways is a different discussion.
100
unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 21h
Yeah we all know the mission creeped and failed. But imagine sustaining an attack like 9/11, knowing how, where and who planned it, and then NOT going in to attempt to dismantle the organization.

Unfortunately, Hamas doesn't have bases in Gaza, they operate within residential areas and tunnels. I sympathize with the Gazan civilians who were caught in the middle. But going into Gaza after the hostages was justified.

Iraq, yes, but why was going into Afghanistan wrong? 9/11 was planned there by al-Qaeda and bin Laden. Are we now also sympathetic to the Taliban?

Because Iraq wasn't responsible for 9/11

Had to report if he so much as took Tylenol. Had to report when we broke up. Had his masters and was one of the most stand-up guys I’ve known. So smart and so committed to doing everything right. And yet would’ve had to take the order, if given, from a petulant, senile, sociopath. Boggles the mind.

I used to date an AF officer who went down into a capsule below Cheyenne each night and waited on that call. It was fascinating. Those guys study & are tested on war game scenarios constantly. They go through rigorous psychological evaluation before getting the job, and are monitored constantly…

Right? Every single American posting Free Palestine & meaning land back should be able to show what they’ve done to give land back to indigenous Americans. I once asked this of a writer living outside of Boulder who owns acres of “stolen“ land she could deed to an indigenous family & was blocked.

At this point, I just leave an online conversation when someone drops the word "colonizer". It's not a rejection of historical reality. It's just that, at this point, dropping that word in a tweet has become a sure sign that you're a self-righteous twat.

I’d bet anything that a random Cuban-American on the street can explain communism and socialism better than your average American can

Agreed! But that’s post-election. I can’t quite understand it, but the data shows that, until recently, the anti-communism argument has resonated for them more than any other 🤷‍♀️

They say they don’t like ICE’s recent escalation. But opposition to communism and socialism has been their #1 priority for decades. Maybe Dems have an opening to flip some of them now? I guess we’ll find out…

I’m no expert, but based on the election polling I’ve seen, they don’t consider themselves to be one of the turkeys. As US citizens, they see themselves very much apart from the immigrants who arrive illegally. 🤷‍♀️

unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Cubans in Florida generally vote Republican as an anti-Communism measure. They view Trump's potential liberation of Cuba favorably. More complicated re: ICE. They historically favor enforcement but recent polling shows that they think ICE is going too far.

unitystudios.bsky.social @unitystudios.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
ICE is 30% Hispanic. Trump won in 2024 due in part to Hispanic men shifting rightward. One of the reasons Florida has flipped red is the Cuban vote. No ethnicity is immune to othering.
