Hundreds of archaeologists 🏺across the country just lost their jobs with no notice, but did you know that companies are actually required by law to provide formal notice of mass layoffs at least 60 days in advance?

Chronicle Heritage may be leaving the industry, but we can't let them get away that easily! If your rights under the WARN Act were violated, you and your co-workers have a right to restitution!
Square graphic with a light/dark red pinwheel background with a text box in the center that reads "Under the Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, eligible employees must receive a written notice 60 days before the date of a mass layoff or plant closing. If your employer fails to provide proper advance notification of a mass layoff, you may be able to seek damages for back pay and benefits for up to 60 days of work."Square graphic with faded background of an excavation photo. Text reads: Who Is Protected? The WARN Act protects both full-time and part-time employees at companies that employ >100 full-time employees. The WARN Act defines a full-time employee as someone who:
-works an average of 20 hours a week or more AND
-Has worked for an employer for more than 6 of the last 12 months

Even part-time workers are entitled to advance notice of a mass layoff!

As a former CRM field director- I always despised large regional/national firms that low balled contracts and took work away from local subject matter specialists that could actually approach their work as scholarship. There is not much new work out there due to Trump administration de-regulations.

CRM is squarely at the intersection of Capitalism St. and Colonialism Ave. The archaeologists and the heritage they ostensibly protect are inherently susceptible to interests and legislation actively disincentivized from promoting sustainable and equitable treatment of workers and First Nations.🏺

In June 2024, field archaeologists at the Maryland office of Goodwin & Associates voted to unionize with Teamsters and Allied Workers Local Union No. 992.
Text on a faded photo background of CRM fieldwork.
Text: Field Archaeologists and Field Directors at the Maryland office of Goodwin & Associates won their union election in June 2024. Goodwin & Associates accepted the election results, but before bargaining could even begin, management attempted to weaken the bargaining unit by unilaterally changing the terms and conditions of employment & firing a union member
Text on a dark/light red pinwheel background.
Text: In response, the union filed two Unfair Labor Practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board in August and October 2024, but the cases are still pending.
In the meantime, these changes have succeeded in forcing out members of the bargaining unit.
Of the 13 people who received ballots in 2024, only 3 were left by 2025.

Two footnotes include the ULP case numbers, 05-CA-348638 and 05-CA-353217

So a majority of #archaeology in the US is driven by Section 106. Most archaeologists work for the #Crm industry. This is also the mechanism by which 99% of preservation occurs in this country. It is about to go away.

The attack on Chaco Canyon, the shrinking of Bears Ears, the gutting of Section 106 is all related. Erasing tangible places that hold our history is the ultimate erasure of the people connected to those places. When that history is forgotten the land is free for extraction.

The non-archaeological community needs to know the administration is gutting the law that preserves historical sites for the benefit of the nation, weakening the voices of tribes in the process. While it may be a fait accompli commenting will provide future lawsuits with material to fight back.

💯 I can think of multiple papers on gender and publishing trends in archaeology that just assumed gender based on the authors' first names and what they could glean from a quick google search, and thought that was sufficient to assign gender/identify any non-cis authors 😵‍💫😬

According to the article they grouped all trans and nonbinary respondents together due to low sample size (n=18) which is fair from a data analysis standpoint, but yeah it definitely leads to some wonky language in the discussion of summary data

"Women, noncisgendered, & entry-level archaeologists are the most vulnerable to negative experiences, that the pressure to push beyond one’s limits is universal, and that discrimination and harassment are factors increasingly considered by women as they decide whether to continue in the profession."

TetraTech, an engineering consulting firm with extensive cultural resource management contracts across the U.S., has been awarded a contract to build an IDF-controlled settlement in Gaza...The entanglement between genocidal powers and the American CRM industry is a travesty 🏺
Screenshot of an Instagram post by @conflictwire. The post includes an aerial photo showing the areas of Israeli control in Gaza and the following text:
"On Nov. 11, US media reported that the Trump administration was preparing to implement a plan that would create "Alternate Safe Communities" in IDF-controlled areas of Gaza east of the Yellow Line, with a pilot site set to be built in Rafah, southern Gaza. Basic services would be provided as well as temporary housing for approximately 25,000 people, vetted by Israeli intelligence to filter out Hamas members. The US State Department awarded Tetra Tech with a contract to build the first settlement.

So what? This is consistent with Israel's efforts to undermine the Hamas movement as a governing body of the Gaza Strip by establishing parallel, competing structures and is in line with our previous assessment that Tel Aviv likely hopes to expand the influence of various anti-Hamas armed groups into Hamas-controlled territory and undermine its status as governing authority in a divided Gaza Strip. This new reporting shows it intends to push peo leave the unsafe areas towards ones under nominal IDF control being rebuilt.
