Fab panel for #Wayword today with Tasha Suri and VL Bovalino talking about lady knights and warrior women. Tasha kindly signed my illumicrate edition despite the fact that it technically came signed and dedicated it, with a little drawing of the cat from the book
Illumicrate edition of the Isle in the Silver Sea: Vina the knight is on the left in pale armour with short dark hair and she's holding the chin of Simran, the witch, who has long dark hair. Had a great time at #Wayword book festival today (Sea Shanties; Katalina Watt & Anbara Salam; Hannah Kaner & Georgia Leighton), and what incredible views there are from the top floor of the Duncan Rice library! Picked up Anbara's queer marine archaeologist book because I mean, of course?!

Why are you making my little bird pal read Dune, Finch?! I really don't think that's a suitable book for someone who ends sentences with "cheep"
Screenshot from the Finch app.

Sprout: he gets a lot of power, but it happens so fast. I like that the book shows that people have dimension and aren't always completely good or bad, cheep!

Aldwych's second platform was closed in 1917 and part was covered over to store paintings in WW1 and artefacts in WW2. It's also been used to test out styles for other stations. The other platform wasn't closed until 1994 but is frequently used for filming so there is a lot of replica advertising

Found my old Lord of the Rings. I thought I'd read this when I was 13, but evidence says otherwise - and I read my parents' copy first, and bought this one later so I might even have been 11

I went to a writing workshop that turned out to be blackout poetry. Task: make something gay out of Fourth Wing. This is what I came up with
No one stays forever. We live long enough with worry, combust. We left long silence. The sun is returning. Tense, my gaze flies straight An offering, a response. My emotions scattered. I didn't know. I know you my ruinWaiting I hold my breath. She's the center. I can't counter. She's gone. I drop to my knees. I didn't leave her.

And the National Library of Scotland where I saw a Gutenberg Bible, and ‘Daemonologie' by King James VI, 1597
Huge Bible with two columns of text and some illustrations

The Gutenberg Bible

In the 1440s, German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg (c. 1400-1468) began the printing revolution in Europe. Before this, texts were handwritten or produced from carved wooden blocks.

Gutenberg's press was more fully mechanised than others of the time. Text could be printed more quickly, at less expense and with greater accuracy than before. By 1455, Gutenberg's printing experiments culminated with the production of about 180 copies of the Bible, the first substantial book printed in Europe with moveable metal type.

To manage its great size, the Bibles were bound into two parts: the first include the first half of the Old Testament, with the latter half and New Testament included in the second.

Today, 49 copies of Gutenberg's Bible are known to exist and only 21 of those are complete including the Library's copy.A small book with dense text

'Daemonologie' by King James VI, 1597.

Also saw works by long-term partners Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun - I read The Two Roberts by Damian Barr about them and highly recommend it
Robert MacBryde (1913-1966)

Still Life, about 1947

Oil on canvas

In the early 1940s, Scottish artist Robert MacBryde moved to London with his long-term partner, fellow artist and creative collaborator, Robert Colquhoun. There, 'The Two Roberts' joined a vibrant bohemian scene of leading artists and poets. This still life was painted in their Bedford Gardens studio, where the two artists lived and worked together. MacBryde presents the unexpected combination of a curved slice of melon and a sharply patterned backgammon board. The juxtaposition of the soft and the angular, and the exposure of the objects' interiors, plays on their gendered symbolism. Two enigmatic shadows cast over the table add an unsettling note to the composition. Intensely influenced by George Braque's work, MacBryde earned himself the nickname 'MacBraque'

Bequeathed by Miss Elizabeth Watt, 1989 (GMA 3497)Robert Colquhoun (1914-1962)

Artist (Self-Portrait), about 1940 Oil on Canvas

In the early 1940s, Scottish artist Robert Colquhoun set up in London with his long-term partner, fellow artist and creative collaborator, Robert MacBryde. There, the 'Two Roberts' joined a vibrant bohemian scene of leading artists and poets of their time. Painted in his mid-20s, Colquhoun's closely observed self-portrait shows the confident young artist at the beginning of his career. Responding to fellow artists such as Pablo Picasso and Jankel Adler, his style soon evolved, while the human figure remained a central focus. Describing his new vision as 'many sided', for Colquhoun each new painting represented'...a kind of discovery, a discovery of new forms, colour relation, or balance in composition'.

Purchased 1990 (PG 2815)

Saw some cool art at Modern 1 but this is one for the Who fans - Daphne Oram, co-founder of the Radiophonic Workshop, by Victoria Morton (2014)
Brightly coloured painting of Daphne Oram sitting at a desk writing with her equipment around her

In her painting, Victoria Morton (born 1971) evokes the pulsating music of trailblazing electronic composer Daphne Oram (1925-2003). Oram co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957 where she created sound effects and otherworldly scores to dramatise radio and television productions. Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001) later created the iconic Dr Who soundtrack there. Oram invented Oramics, a process for synthesising sound by drawing shapes directly onto film. She commented: 'Once the composer can write without the limitations of performance his palette is extended enormously... Rhythms become anything the composer can visualise ... Timbres have no registration and theoretically any sound, musical or otherwise, is within his grasp.'
